The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation’s fellowship awards its recipients a stipend to continue their practices at a high level and under “the freest possible conditions.”

Join us in extending our congratulations to both artists, whose works are now on view in our exhibition ‘The Journey Continues.’

This is Arlene Shechet’s sculpture “Snow Day” on view in 'The Journey Continues.’

Shechet’s practice defies conventions of traditional handbuilt ceramics by celebrating the slumps, cracks, folds, and other imperfections of the medium. The work’s natural textures allow a translucent coating of glaze to cling to the clay’s surface like a dusting of frost on a winter day.

Combining glazed ceramic with unpolished concrete, the sculpture balances fragility and solidity, resulting in a dynamic and poetic composition.

We are pleased to announce that Arlene Shechet will be our guest lecturer in conversation with Carl and Marilynn Thoma Provostial Professor in the Arts and Humanities Alexander Nemerov during our annual Burt and Deedee McMurtry Lecture in May. While the event is at capacity, we’ll share a recording of the lecture afterwards.

In celebration of our 10th anniversary and our Spr In celebration of our 10th anniversary and our Spring Exhibition ‘The Journey Continues,’ we’re excited to present ‘Talismans of Place and Touch: Tactile Histories / Kinetic Memories’ organized by @stanfordcinematheque on April 27.

The screening delves into the dimensions of memory, histories, and their corresponding journeys by reaching into the distant path and unfolding future. Through this selection of videos, the power of film to present tactile forms of remembrance is unveiled. Included in a selection of films is one directed by artist Sadie Benning, whose multimedia work "Untitled, Blow Up 35" is on view in ‘The Journey Continues.’
