“The ancient world is with us, all around us, all the time. You’ve only got to raise your eyes above shop level to look at architecture, you’ve only got to listen to language or think of ideas about who we are as people, where we’ve come from and the classics light up any conversation of that kind.”

“Classics is important not because, I think, the Ancient Greeks and Romans were special in any particular way but because they provoke us to think really critically about how we operate today. It’s really fun learning about ancient civilisations and there is some very cool archaeology and history to delve into, and every now and then there are moments of profound familiarity with the classical world and then mind-blowingly weird ones too! Let’s not fetishise these societies – they weren’t better, or good or amazing – they were just as complicated and messy and sometimes horrific and sometimes brilliant as every other civilisation in time and history and geography. Let’s not put them on a pedestal but let’s not forget them either because Classics is pretty cool!”
“The more we have big problems today, the more we have to look back at the Classics and the more we have to widen their appeal. This is what the CA is really good at and that’s why its mission is so relevant now.”
Prof. Dame Mary Beard, Britain’s most celebrated and renowned Classicist, was the CA’s Honorary Presidentin 2018-2019 and is a former recipient of the CA Prize.
“I am continuously fascinated by the stories of the ancient world. Living in the present we often think we are faced by new challenges, witnessing the age of discovery and advancement. However, these challenges, these discoveries can be true of the ancient world; people have faced environmental change, political and social upheaval, migration and displacement, the flourishing of ideas and cultures. These types of stories are what connects us as human beings regardless of time and space. The study of the ancient world is as relevant as the study of any discipline that makes us human”
