Google announced it is rolling out new Gemini summary cards to Gmail apps for Android and iOS. The new feature cuts down a few steps when you need Google's AI chatbot to analyze your messages in Gmail and summarize them.
Gemini will automatically display summaries at the top of the email content where it is helpful. This can include longer emails or emails with several replies. The AI chatbot will synthesize all the important points from the email thread and keep the summaries up-to-date by including subsequent replies.
Gmail on Android and iOS already offers the ability to summarize emails. But it is triggered when you tap on the "Summarize this email" button, and a Gemini overlay appears with the required summary. Right now, the new Gemini summary cards are only available for emails in English.
Summary cards won't appear for all the emails, according to Google. For the emails that don't display Gemini-powered summaries, you can still use the "Summarize this email" button or open the Gemini overlay using the star button at the top.
Gemini summary cards in Gmail are rolling out to different Workspace tiers, including Business Starter/Standard/Plus, Enterprise Starter/Standard/Plus, Google One AI Premium, and users who purchased Gemini add-ons. Google didn't mention when the feature will roll out to users with personal Google accounts.
Not just emails, summary cards in Gmail have many other jobs. They can pull useful information from emails such as flight tickets, bills, promotions, order tracking, events, and more. Google added new action buttons to summary cards as part of a big update pushed last year.
The search giant has introduced a series of updates and changes to Gmail in recent months, including the ability to respond with emojis, design updates for iOS, and data classification labels. Gmail has also dropped support for the outdated 3DES encryption technology in incoming SMTP connections.
