As a bit of background I'm using postfix to receive mail for multiple users after Fasthosts have performed mail forwarding for the original receiving domain.

For example:

[email protected] -> Fasthosts Mail Server : [email protected] -> My Mailserver.

This is working very well for all bar one user. which is getting several errors (although not all the time). The redacted error message is listed below:

I'm running Linux mydomain.com 4.14.355-280.679.amzn2.x86_64

Postfix version mail_version = 2.10.1

NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from mail213-171-216-85.livemail.co.uk[213.171.216.85]: 450 4.7.1 <deferred-out-03.wtr.livemail.co.uk>: Helo command rejected: Host not found; from=<SRS0=sqcO=3Z=my.bank.co.uk=prvs=345568dae=customerservices@clustered-mail-forwarding-04.uk> to=<[email protected]> proto=ESMTP helo=<deferred-out-03.wtr.livemail.co.uk>

I'm struggling to understand why it's just one user, and why it's not all the time.

main.cf below:

smtpd_recipient_restrictions =
    check_sender_access regexp:/etc/postfix/sender_access,
    check_recipient_access regexp:/etc/postfix/recipient_access,
    permit_sasl_authenticated,
    permit_tls_all_clientcerts,
    permit_mynetworks,
    reject_unauth_destination,
    reject_non_fqdn_hostname,
    reject_non_fqdn_sender,
    reject_non_fqdn_recipient,
    reject_unknown_recipient_domain,
    reject_unauth_pipelining,
    reject_invalid_hostname,
    reject_unknown_hostname,
    reject_unknown_client

smtpd_relay_restrictions = permit_mynetworks,
        permit_sasl_authenticated,
        reject_unauth_destination

Please note I am not using any helo restrictions:

postconf smtpd_helo_restrictions
smtpd_helo_restrictions =

Is the failure happening at the smtpd_recipient_restrictions rather than helo?

Is there a way I can whitelist all livemail servers anywhere?

I'm wondering if this is the reason:

ping clustered-mail-forwarding-04.uk
PING clustered-mail-forwarding-04.uk (213.171.216.218) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from o365.cmp.livemail.co.uk (213.171.216.218): icmp_seq=1 ttl=239 time=156 ms

Or this:

ping deferred-out-03.wtr.livemail.co.uk
ping: deferred-out-03.wtr.livemail.co.uk: Name or service not known

Thanks, Steve

  • I've ascertained that the problems is with the deferred-out-03.wtr.livemail.co.uk address - I've raised it with Fasthosts, had to teach their first line support chap about mail servers. He just needs to forward the chat onto 2nd/3rd line support and opened up a whitelist (albeit temporarily) for any of the livemail servers. The reason it's only one user is that their domain name is alphabetically below all the other users and I'm guessing Fasthosts are migrating users to new servers. Commented Sep 15 at 16:26
