One of our favourite apps for learning another language, the process is genuinely fun. What’s more, all those languages and games are available for free!

  • Great App

Hello world,I was hearing about this app for the last 10 years and I like its branding. Im using Duolingo for half a month now and I possess the max subscription. Currently, I am finishing the first section of the French. I really love the video calls idea and I really expect they will get longer and harder as I progress. I also dont get it why everyone goes mad about that AI-first statement. Could someone factually explain whats wrong with that specific idea? If it brings new cool features, makes learning more efficient, and permits to not increase the dev cost/subscription price for prolonged time, then what the matter? I know that it is fashionable and hyped to hate AI-first companies for some mystic identity loss and a lot of others imagined reasons. But rationally, the fuss is logical when company lies/misleads about it, or just applies the AI stuff to not miss the hype-train. It is clearly not a Duo’s case. The AI is applied where it is the most needed. I accept just factual opinion, no false, ungrounded criticism and cancel-culture talks, please. Also, I have something to get mad about too, idiomatically speaking. Or just frustrated a bit. Why golden chest in the daily quest is empty? I noticed that but I just dont get it, why the last quest gets no reward. It feels very illogical. Id say it is super minor, but it would be cool if that would have been fixed. Many thanks!I still dont know if the app will really make me speak French freely, but I am really devoted to that, so, it is possible I will get with an update after I finish the French. And I really hope, I’ll text in pure French!Thank you DuoDevs, and I hope you have a great week!

  • Good for a foundation level knowledge

    Zsanett🇭🇺

Personally I went the extra mile since I am dedicated to learn Swedish, and I bought a year's worth of Super Duolingo. With this, it's much more appealing to learn consistently, every day. It teaches you some useful phrases that you can use to get around town in a foreign country, and on the longrun I believe it can help with much more complex things as well, however at the time of writing this I am still relatively in the beginning of the Swedish course. It helps you get a foundation level understanding that you can start using when reading texts in the language you're learning, and from there on exploring other forms of getting used to the language, such as videos or chatting with online friends who are native speakers.

  • Nice app, but beware of total waste of time

    Danbaragan

This is a very nice app/game. It will help you have a glimpse of a foreign language. And if you spend enough time (years?) even read/understand a foreign language. Make no mistake though - the focus of this app is so that you *do not* learn a foreign language to the level you will start perfecting it while speaking with foreigners. It’s focus is to keep you see ads for as long of possible. This is not a technical limitation but rather a design choice and business model. (The percent of native language to target language question is ridiculously low (max 10%) and all requests to do something about it were deflected by the team for various reasons)Start using it, then make a calculation for yourself and see how much it will take you to complete a course. Note how bad you remain at writing/formulating sentences in the target language and decide if that time is worth wasting. Compare it to the value you would get from attending language courses, or possibly other apps focused on teaching you a language efficiently even if that means letting you go at the end. It’s nice as a way to kill time though, like a mobile game, but more useful.

  • Why is it not possible to pay the subscription in monthly installments?

    Alexxa CC

Dear Duolingo, I love your app. It has allowed me to remember almost all I’ve learned in school and learn a lot of new stuff. I love that it’s interactive and you get to compete with others. I also love the animations in each exercise. They make learning so much fun. I got the free version of the app at first, but the commercials and the limited number of lives are annoying, so I wanted to get the payed version. But lo and behold, if you want it, you have to pay full price from the beginning even though it’s presented as sum per month. In the email you get after subscribing, you are informed that you actually have to pay the whole price. Since the full price is not entirely accessible to everyone, don’t you think more people would subscribe if you’d make it possible to pay the price in monthly installments? I just saying, you brag about being the best at teaching foreign languages. Do better for your subscribers, Duolingo. Do better!

  • Good app but buggy

    Ag3578

I am on a 37-day streak within this app and I appreciate that this app makes it easy to learn new words in a different language by getting you to practice the same words/expressions until they sunk in. I like how you can listen to the pronunciation and then pronounce it yourself (although it does not register accurately whether you pronounced it correctly or not), but what i don’t like is that the app is buggy enough to make you waste gems. You look at ads and then you are not awarded gems although you are informed that you will. Then when paying gems for Legendary levels (100 gems for each lesson!) it does not even unlock those levels, making you have to pay 2 times as much. Very frustrating especially since they don’t refund you those gems when opening a Support ticket and those gems are hard to come by.Good app overall, but i really hope you will fix your gem-relates bugs as it’s getting increasingly frustrating to use it.

  • The “path” update ruined the app

    Ravka3

Personally I found it much more fun to use when it was in the tree format because I had the flexibility to choose between 2-3 different lessons. It’s much more rigid now and also forces you to go through stories when you might not feel like it. I find it quite boring to use now and hard to get through, and the lessons are usually too long (I don’t need 7-8 rounds). Also, the guidebooks would be much more helpful if they were more focused on grammar instead of just giving us some phrases we’re going to have to learn to pass the level anyway. I also think that while initially the concept was very good, they are taking the “gamified” aspect a bit too far and it’s distracting from the actual functionality and purpose of the app. On a final note, it’s a bit demotivating to the user that they can never realistically be done - it used to be so rewarding to get the final golden trophy, but now that the paths are getting longer and longer and you have the option to make everything legendary too, you can never finish your path.

  • Sign in problem

    Rebbeca05

This is the best language app I’ve ever seen! There are so many easy ,fast ,and useful ways to learn any language you want and can choose to!But I also have a problem; after I signed out of my actually account, I wanted to sign in again into my old account, and yes, I’ve written there the email and password I had on that account, whenever I pressed on the “Sign In” button, it just kept saying “We couldn’t log you in, try signing again later.” I tried again later and there was the same problem. Also when I press in the “Forgot password” button, writing my email down, and then pressing the “Send email” button, it says “There’s no Duolingo account with that email address”.Please solve it, any problem would it be there, please do! I really think it’s a nice app, and I really don’t want to uninstall it, but I will be supposed to, if this thing won’t be solved, that’s why I gave a recession of 3 stars , and then writing it like so!

  • Worthless for Korean

    Gabby_ozzy4

The app does not offer pronunciation help in Latin characters for languages like Korean. Because there is absolutely no way one can learn the correct way to say a word, it is impossible to properly learn the language. Even when I grossly mispronounce a word, the app will mark it as correct. Don’t waste your money on the app if the goal is to learn languages with completely unknown alphabets. Duolingo expects you to read Korean as an absolute beginner. Because I can’t possibly read the words the exercise turns into a guessing game until the app makes it impossible for you to choose a wrong answer and before you know it, they move you to a next level. I tried to get a refund on the Super Duolingo subscription - not eligible for a refund. So now I have a subscription I can’t use because it’s worthless and, on top of that, I can’t get my money back. There are better apps out there - don’t sign up if you can’t read the alphabet of the language you are trying to lean. It’s a total rip off!

  • The last update is terrible

    AndreeaM30

The fact that they removed separate topics (e. g. adverbs, pronouns, science, etc.) makes learning less efficient, as now the app forces you to do one lesson at a time, following a “path”, which is not oriented on a specific topic. In this way, lessons are more boring and repetitive, and they don’t allow the learner to solve different exercises. I hope they will fix this issue and realise that it was a bad decision to change the course of the app in such a way. Even before duolingo wasn’t the best choice for learning languages, as it was more helpful for vocabulary rather than grammar, but now it is much worse! Moreover, instead of focusing of making learning better and more accessible, they make special lessons cost more gems and reduce the amount of gems received in chest awards. I get it that they want to make money, but at least they shouldn’t lose quality.

  • Not at all what is seems

    FES666

While I am learning a few French words every day I am learning a lot about online scams, malicious games and apps. This app has only one purpose and will do anything it can to take you to that place. I am talking of course about getting you to pay for the subscription. It will show you so many annoying ads and it will cheat you so much out of energy they are using AI for translations and the result is catastrophic to save the list. Wrong answers are seen as good and vice versa. It is just a mess. Just buy an online course made by professional people and just get done with it. If you plan on using the free tier prepare to be extremely annoyed and to have your IQ drop from their ads. Doesn’t anybody find it strange that if you want to upgrade and pay for the subscription there is no way to know or see the price. If you want to know who they are, just google some of the games they advertise. Start with Wipeout Survival.
