Great app, bad algorithms

I have used this app for a long time and I love it. Recently though, the algorithms used for “all of reddit” are getting wonky. There has always been the rare post in another language, usually from r/countryname such as r/Germany or r/Poland. The other day I decided to start blocking these subreddits when they appear. Apparently this is taken as positive feedback, as now more and more posts are from these non-English subreddits, about 1 in 4 now compared to more like 1 in 100. Not sure if it’s the app or reddit algorithms, but not ideal. I guess I’ll eventually get em all blocked.

I’ve been using this app for over a decade, since around 2012 or so. Even after Reddit came out with their own app, I kept using this one exclusively. It was just so much better than any of the alternatives out there. Now Reddit thinks the way forward is to cut off support for third party apps and move all traffic to their own app. I don’t think they realize that they’ve ruined their whole site in the process. Between removing third party support, the influx of bots, the ads, all the recent seo manipulation, and the approval to train AIs on Reddit content, I’m afraid Reddit has passed the point of no return. And today I finally got an “Error 301 (moved permanently)” when refreshing my feed. This app has been great. Thank you David for the many years of development and maintenance. I’m gonna go touch some grass for a while I guess.
It was a good run.

I love this app because it limits Reddit content to just pictures, with an option to view comments and other features for a small price. It felt weird to pay for what is basically an extension of the free Reddit app, but I paid it anyway because I wanted to avoid the relative cesspool of Reddit as a whole. However, the app recently changed its process to display comments to force you to open the Reddit app. But when you do, it takes you to your browser, which then redirects you to open the app, but which directs you to the App Store, and forces you to open the app from there. And of course, the page you’re looking for does not open when you finally get to Reddit — just the homepage.Looking back, it seems like a waste of money to have purchased this app. But I love browsing these pictures late at night when I need to fall asleep with minimal distractions. And now, I can’t quickly read comments for context or background like I have been, and this app feels useless now.

I have been using this app for literally 11 years now (through several iPhones) to access Reddit. I have always found the actual Reddit apps to be too detailed and this app does a great job of simplifying things down. it’s easy for me to navigate to the subreddits I want to see pictures from and then there are different options to easily sort the results for different metrics. I also think the “front page” algorithm of this app does a great job of pulling what is trending on Reddit at any time without showing unrelated stuff. I also must commend this app for somehow surviving Reddit ending its 3rd party apps? Thank you to whoever keeps this app running.Yes, the premium is worth it if you use Reddit regularly.

There is a very high likelihood that this app will stop working soon. If so, I hope you guys enjoyed using this app for all these years. Can you believe it?
