More games should strive to be like Void Tyrant

I play a lot of games. Less than I did back in my days of managing a game store, and far less than I did before my daughter was born, but I play a LOT of games. Lately, I’ve felt that most games feel like they have the same general design flaws, mechanics that get boring after so many hours; an overemphasis on graphics, zero effort put into composing a decent soundtrack, etc...Void Tyrant (Armor Games Studio, Quite Fresh) works to disillusion you from AAA cash cows by subverting all modern expectations of what a game should be. This RPG, card battling, rogue-like throws a clever spin on a timeless classic, blackjack. Blackjack is fun, always has been, always will be, but Quite Fresh manages to rework it slightly to fit the balance of the game. You and your opponent take turns drawing one of 24 cards numbered 1-6, and your goal is to get as close to 12 without going over. The difference between your score and your opponents is the final number of attacks that get dealt out. This simple, yet familiar battle system never seems to get old. There is much more I would like to say about this game, but I’m really not sure how long these App Store reviews are supposed to be. Regardless, this is an incredible game! Void Tyrant has a solid design that still hasn’t gone stale after ~30 hours of gameplay. Can’t wait to see new content and (though I may catch flak for saying this), multiplayer could work really well given a few adjustments to balance and some other additions.

I didn’t think I was going to like this game at first, because I normally don’t like free to play games with ads and in app purchases, but after playing for a few days I quickly paid for the premium version with no ads and a few permenant power ups that aid you throughout the game. Even if you don't pay for premium, you still can use the same power ups, you just have to watch an ad each time you use them, so in other words it’s not a pay to win cash grab. I would think of the free version as a demo to the premium game, which is reasonably priced at around 4.99 I believe. The game is a mixture of strategy and gambling (no wonder it’s so addicting!). You have two decks; one with numbered cards which you play kind of like black jack by trying to get a higher number than your opponent without going over 12, and another deck with cards like weapons, potions, magic attacks, and modifiers that can aid you in getting a high number closer to to 12 without busting. So it’s a nice balance that doesn’t rely completely on luck, but sometimes relies on taking chances in order to win a round and it’s super satisfying when it works out! I’ve been super into rougelite single player card games like Meteorfall recently, and I really like this one. Give it a try! Since it’s free to play you might as well see if you like it!

Love the game, super fun, not overly monetized or ad intensive (ad options are not crucial), and lots of room for content growth. Very interesting game play with the potential for requiring well thought out turns and proper sequencing of play. I don’t particularly like blind and daze mechanics but the game would likely be too easy without them. There is a late late game bug for knights where you use power surge III to get 20 attacks because you always take max energy increase. When the attacks fill up the screen and I kill the opponent the game just freezes there it never acknowledges the death of the opponent and moves on to the next one, I have to restart the game and find a way to win without using it, which is disappointing because I spent two upgrades on it and it can be a big help to get extra attacks to gain health back. But I’m excited to see new things in this game, maybe paying some coins to choose your race or even new game modes. I think the enemies could scale faster after the void tyrant battles. I’d also like to see more stores and unique interactions after the boss. Also more ways to get rid of cards as the decks get big in the late game. One way could be stores that require you to sell several cards in order to buy a rare or unlockable item. Would love to see more campaigns, planets, followers, side missions and enemies and all the good stuff that the game already does well

This game is great. Been grinding on it for a few days (and grinding it is, but not to the point you mind). If you like RPG’s pick it up and play for a while. The black jack battle system, while not unique to this game, fits in nicely (pickup those modifiers!). The game’s biggest quirk is the progression. At the time of this writing, you can only choose two locales (although each location may have different sub levels) to battle through and then you’re off to the final boss level. This won’t be easy, and it’ll take you several play-throughs just to beat one level, let alone all the way to the end. However, why only a two location play through? Is it a concern that players may level too quickly? Obtain too much loot and whoop up on ol’ Wruut? The problem I’m facing right now is that I’ve not faced my final death but I’m still alive in the chaos pyramid. Part of me hopes on step 666 I’ll get set free and be able to play the other planets, but the rational part of my brain knows that won’t happen. So now I farm gold until I choose to blunder against an Elite Potator (yes, the potato children shall be my chosen means of self annihilation). I know this game is new, but the “endless mode” seems punishing. I know it gives you a choice between letting the character fade away to legend or fighting on endlessly, but man, do they sure mean endlessly. But I digress, wonderful game. Wonderfully made. Congrats to the game makes! Keep up the good work. As soon as I can spend on those IAP’s I will. You guys earned it. I hope you all do well enough to keep adding to this game. You’ve got my support.
