Neagley’s Best ‘Reacher’ Quote Proves Why Prime Video Gave Her a Spin-Off

The Reacher universe is about to get a whole lot bigger in the coming weeks, as the fan-favorite series is about to see its very first spin-off debut on Prime Video. After the current fourth season of Reacher concludes, the service will roll right into the new series one week later, jumping from Alan Ritchson's Special Investigator to his best friend and closest confidant, Frances Neagley. With three seasons of Reacher under her belt, Maria Sten will become first on the call sheet for the spin-off, focusing on Neagley's journey away from Reacher's missions.

It makes total sense for Neagley to be the Reacher character to land a spin-off, seeing as she's the only character in the series not named Jack Reacher to appear in more than two seasons. Given Reacher's popularity, this Neagley series feels like a layup, but there's one moment from Sten in Reacher Season 3 that affirms just how compelling, dark, and hilarious Neagley can be on her own.

Neagley's Best Solo Moment in 'Reacher'

While Neagley has appeared alongside Reacher for most of her time in the flagship series, she has enjoyed a few scenes away from the titular hero over the last couple of years, and Sten has absolutely made the most of them. The most memorable of Neagley's solo sequences also served as proof that she can bring all sorts of entertainment all on her own, and it pulled back the curtain on what her non-Reacher life might look like.

During the third season of Reacher, a couple of hitmen pay Neagley a visit at her office in Chicago, trying to take her out for her involvement with Jack. Of course, being Neagley, she disposes of them without too much trouble. Before killing them all, however, Neagley does what she can to get some information, toying with a dying hitman in the process. It's here that she really shines as a solo act, delivering her best quote of the series.

One of the hitman is clearly bleeding out, and he's begging Neagley to get him help. She obviously won't do it without getting information from him first. She sits down with a bowl of cereal, casually crunching down on sugar while the man dies next to her. He says, "Call me an ambulance," begging one final time to be saved (though he's already too far gone). With a completely serious face, Neagley replies, "Okay, you're an ambulance." When he looks back at her, angry at the joke, she simply shakes her head and says "No sense of humor," before going back to her cereal.

Neagley Is a Great Spin-Off Lead

Part of the appeal of Ritchson's Reacher is his deadpan, no-nonsense approach to basically everything. He's actually pretty hilarious most of the time, but not because he's trying to be. He's a lot like Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy, taking everything seriously to the point where it's sometimes comical. Neagley has that same deadpan approach, and gets just as many laughs, but she's much more intentional about it.

Unlike Reacher, Neagley knows when she's cracking jokes, and she often delivers them at just the right time. The genius of her comedy is that she's able to get morbid and intentionally funny while keeping the same demeanor and tone as Reacher himself. This subtle difference shows how the Neagley spinoff can stand on its own and give audiences something different from Reacher, while still keeping true to the overall energy and vibe of the flagship series.
