For nearly half a decade, Microsoft has been one of the largest buyers of high-quality carbon removal. We've committed to buy tens of millions of CDR credits - typically years before delivery while projects were still in development stages - all to help build the supply of critical climate solutions that the world needs. While we have periodically shared our thoughts on the market (such as https://lnkd.in/gBumrJsq), guidance on what constitutes high-quality carbon removal (https://lnkd.in/gNUuqNdf), and highlighted some innovative suppliers (https://aka.ms/AAz55rp), but we haven't always explained why we made individual purchase decisions. Today, I'm elated to share spotlights on 4 projects where we serve as an anchor buyer, spanning soil organic carbon (SOC), afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation (ARR), improved forest management (IFM), and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). These spotlights explain how we assess whether 1) a project can be successfully built, 2) each carbon credit produced represents a metric tonne of CO2 removed from the atmosphere, and 3) it meets our other essential quality requirements. We hope these vignettes help explain how our team evaluates hundreds of applications and builds conviction in the projects we ultimately support. We are proud to work with MOMBAK, Indigo, EFM, and Ørsted as they continue to deliver CDR solutions. I want to recognize the excellent work of TJ Considine, Ross Bernet, Steph Harris, Corinne Grainger, Rafael Broze, Sean Foster, Kari Blanton, Nathalie Salazar, and Jessica Hinojosa who have partnered with these suppliers over the past several years and helped bring this behind-the-scenes work to light, in addition to Brian Marrs and Melanie Nakagawa for your executive sponsorship of our CDR work and Sam Winninghoff your consistent support. If you're a buyer or other industry stakeholder, let us know how these spotlights help you in scaling the CDR market. Your input will help us determine how Microsoft can best share what we've learned to move this industry forward faster. Link to spotlights in first comment 👇

  • Mombak is proud to announce its first deliveries of reforestation credits - more than two years ahead of schedule. Following the issuance of more than 21,000 tonnes of CO₂ removed from the atmosphere by our native biodiverse projects in the Amazon, certified by @Isometric under a CCP-approved protocol, we are delivering credits to a group of buyers including Google, McKinsey & Company, and Bain & Company - who are members of the Symbiosis Coalition - as well as Climeworks, Commons, McLaren Racing, and Union Square Ventures. This is the first delivery of credits from a Symbiosis-approved project. The deliveries include new sales contracts (both spot and forward offtakes), as well as delivery against existing offtake agreements. Credits are being delivered to Google, McKinsey and McLaren Racing over 2 years ahead of expectations. This milestone demonstrates that high-integrity carbon removal can be delivered at scale from reforestation in the Amazon and reinforces Mombak's position as a company capable of turning ambitious commitments into verified outcomes. “Trust is earned through delivery. By issuing real, durable carbon removal credits and delivering them to customers more than two years ahead of schedule, we’re demonstrating that Mombak can be relied on to deliver both quality and execution." said Gabriel Haddad Silva, CEO of Mombak. We're proud to announce the issuance of Mombak's first ARR carbon removal credits, certified by Isometric. This milestone also marks the first nature-based carbon credits ever certified by Isometric and the world's first native-species-only reforestation credits certified using dynamic baselines. These reforestation credits are backed by almost 15 million native trees planted across the Brazilian Amazon, across more than 100 native species, and a certification framework designed to set a new benchmark for scientific rigor and transparency in forest carbon removal. "The carbon removal market has been calling for a shift from promises to delivery. This issuance is exactly that. It is an important milestone for Mombak — and for the future of high-integrity carbon removal at scale," said Gabriel Haddad Silva, CEO of Mombak.

  • Our CEO, Gabriel Haddad Silva, joined Ardian’s Annual General Meetings & Advisory Boards to share Mombak’s story with Ardian’s investors. Coming shortly after Ardian’s announcement of new commitments to its Nature-Based Solutions strategy, the event highlighted the growing interest in turning nature restoration into a scalable investment opportunity. “It was a privilege to bring a concrete example from the ground in the Amazon and discuss the impact that high-quality restoration projects can have on climate, biodiversity, and local communities.” — Gabriel Haddad Silva, CEO of Mombak. We thank the Ardian team for the invitation and for their commitment to investing in nature. #TheNewShapeOfValue #CarbonRemoval #NetZero
