Big step forward for fintech and digital payments in Canada. 🇨🇦 Budget 2025 officially sets the stage for CAD-backed stablecoins to be recognized as payments, not as investments. Here’s what’s coming: • A prudential framework for stablecoins run by the Bank of Canada • 1:1 reserves and clear redemption rules to keep funds safe • Strong standards for risk, privacy, and national security • Updates to the RPAA, so payment companies using stablecoins are recognized as payments providers, not securities dealers We’ve been pushing for this kind of clarity for years at Shakepay, and it’s great to see real progress. Now the focus turns to implementation: making sure the framework stays open, proportional, and accessible, so fintechs can help build the next generation of trusted payment rails for Canadians. Hats off to François-Philippe Champagne and his team. Taking an idea and turning it into a full framework in under 3 months is no small feat.
