HUSSEIN CHALAYAN
Hussein Chalayan is a Cyprus-born, London-trained designer and artist who graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1993. He established his label in 1994 and was named British Designer of the Year in 1999 and 2000. In 2006, he was awarded an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II.
Chalayan’s practice is rooted in cross-disciplinary thinking, drawing on social anthropology, questions of identity, and the philosophy of science. These interests are explored through imagined settings that examine how people, cultures, technologies, and environments shape one another. His work moves fluidly between fashion, art, the gallery, and the museum, encompassing fashion collections as well as exhibitions and interdisciplinary projects.
Alongside his ongoing collaborations, Chalayan is Professor of Sustainability and Innovation in Fashion at HTW Berlin, where he continues to develop new approaches to design, research, and critical practice.
