In terms of similar energy to previous horror sleeper hits, Hokum certainly meets a lot of the criteria, with a singular bankable star and a rising name in horror making waves with horror fans.
The Stephen King-inspired psychological horror film gets a lot of mileage out of the abstract, intricate nature of its horror, blending it with a sense of painful recollection of the past in a way that connected with many fans of the traditional elevated horror style. Its smaller $5 million budget also gave it a lot of leeway to be a financial success, although it largely grew its legs and success once it was released on streaming, being watched by many fans after being praised as one of the best horror films of the year.
One massive experiment has proven to be a prominent success: the jump and transition to the big screen for filmmakers who got their start on YouTube.
