About Emma Kiely

Emma Kiely has been with Collider since 2021 and has been Horror Editor since July 2023. Emma has a degree in English and Film from University College Dublin. For a while, due to pandemic-induced existential dread, Emma thought she wanted to be a capital-G Girlboss so she got a Master's Degree in Digital Marketing. Emma worked in marketing for a total of three months before she got the opportunity to go to the Cannes Film Festival. As they say, the rest is Herstory.

Emma is used to defending her horror interests because she prefers the likes of Host, Lake Mungo, and Unfriended. Outside of horror, Emma enjoys just about any detective miniseries, particularly the ones where they wear big puffy coats and investigate the death of a sixteen-year-old girl in an obscure town in England. When not burning her eyes out from a screen, Emma enjoys detective novels, gluten-free baking, and writing bios that make her sound like a 60-year-old woman. (She's in her 20s.)

Favorite Media

Emma loves detective miniseries and shows like Happy Valley, Mare of Easttown, Unforgotten, and Broadchurch.

Her favorite horror subgenres are screen life and found footage. She adores the movies Unfriended, Host, Rec, and Lake Mungo. But above all else, her favorite horror movie of all time is Scream — so much so that she dressed up as Drew Barrymore's Casey Becker at the ripe age of 24.

Her other favorite movies include Jaws, Muriel's Wedding, Django Unchained, Little Miss Sunshine, and Ruby Sparks.

On her days off, you can find Emma perusing the streets of London, listening to Charli XCX or Chappell Roan, vintage shopping, going to the cinema, and drinking an ungodly amount of tea.

Industry Experience

Before joining Collider, Emma wrote for various publications in both Ireland and the UK. This brought her to the Cannes Film Festival in 2021. There, she watched and reviewed movies from the likes of Andrea Arnold, Sean Baker, and Todd Haynes.

Since joining Collider, Emma has interviewed some of Ireland's most prominent filmmakers, including Cillian Murphy, Enda Walsh, and Colm Bairéad.

In the horror field, Emma has spoken to Matthew Lillard about his Scream legacy and what it was like working with David Lynch on Twin Peaks. She also has visited the sets of Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget and Universal's Abigail.

Emma has been proud to help develop the profiles vertical at Collider. She wrote a piece on The Boogeyman and Host director Rob Savage on how he became one of horror's most exciting names and what goes into adapting Stephen King. More recently, she spoke to Melissa Barrera about Your Monster and Abigail, being scared of Saw, and her unceremonious firing from the Scream franchise.

In her features writing, Emma has written on topics ranging from the importance of sex scenes in cinema to the depiction of abortion in Juno to the absolutely crucial reporting of the Don't Worry Darling drama.

Representing Collider, Emma has attended the London Film Festival, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, and the Subtitle Film Festival.
