14 Years Later, Jake Gyllenhaal’s Iconic Crime Thriller Still Holds Up

2026 is angling to be a big year for Jake Gyllenhaal, who is looking to get back on track with a box office hit after a string of misfires with The Covenant and The Bride. Gyllenhaal reunites with his Covenant director for his new action thriller, In The Grey, which co-stars Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) and Eiza González (The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare). Between his latest box office misses, Gyllenhaal did star in one of the best legal thrillers on TV in the last few years with Presumed Innocent, but he is not expected to return in Season 2 of the anthology series, which now stars Rachel Brosnahan (Superman). Gyllenhaal has been tapped to star in the next M. Night Shyamalan thriller, Remain, but the film has been delayed to early 2027 after it was originally revealed for late 2026.

Mark Wahlberg kicked off this year with the aviation thriller, Flight Risk, which was directed by Mel Gibson, but nearly 20 years ago, he starred as a one-man army in an action thriller dominating streaming charts. Wahlberg features alongside Michael Peña and Kate Mara in Shooter, the 2007 political thriller following an expert marksman living in exile who is forced back into his old life after being double-crossed and blamed for an assassination attempt on the President’s life. Shooter has been streaming on Paramount+ for years, but the film has recently resurfaced in the streamer’s top 10, sitting at #5 at the time of writing. Shooter earned scores of 47% from critics and 80% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and the film grossed $95 million at the box office against a $61 million budget.

Amazon MGM has released the final two clips of Jason Statham in A Working Man ahead of the film’s premiere in theaters everywhere tomorrow. Each clip shows Statham getting into a vicious fight, but one takes place on a construction site and the other inside an old, run-down building. While only the construction site sneak peek shows the fight in its entirety, Statham has the upper hand in both and has little-to-no trouble dispatching his foes. In addition to Statham, both David Harbour and Michael Peña have also been tapped for roles in A Working Man. Harbour will also be seen later this year in Thunderbolts*, and Peña was recently featured in the first episode of Landman, the Paramount+ series from Taylor Sheridan.

One of the best police procedural movies of the last 25 years which has been absent from streaming is finally coming home to a new platform. Warner Bros. has announced that End of Watch, the 2012 R-rated crime drama starring Michael Peña and Jake Gyllenhaal, will hit Max on February 24, 10 days after Valentine's Day. The film is shot in documentary style, and it follows two young LA police officers who find themselves in over their heads when they meet forces greater than themselves. End of Watch earned $55 million at the box office on a modest budget of only $7 million, and the film boasts strong scores of 85% from critics and 86% from general audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

However, more than 15 years ago, Wahlberg played Bob Lee Swagger in Shooter, which has gone on to become one of his most famous roles and movies in his 30-year+ career. Shooter, which also stars Michael Peña and Kate Mara, has made its way back to the Paramount+ top 10, after spending a considerable amount of time there earlier in the summer. The film also stars Danny Glover, Rhona Mitra, and Tate Donovan, and it currently sits at a "rotten" 48% score from critics and an 80% rating from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
