With director Ridley Scott making his long-awaited return to the sci-fi genre this month, one of his most successful late-period movies is about to be removed from its streaming home. Scott made a name for himself with landmark sci-fi movies such as Alien and Blade Runner, but has spent the better part of the last decade working on period movies. His last release was Gladiator II, which underperformed at the box office relative to its reported budget of $300 million. He also directed the costly historical dramas Napoleon and The Last Duel. On August 29, however, Scott is returning with The Dog Stars, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi film headlined by Jacob Elordi.

There's no denying that Disney's The Mandalorian and Groguhad a cataclysmic second and third-weekend drops at the box office, setbacks that it will have a difficult time bouncing back from. The first Star Wars movie in seven years simply didn't come across as event viewing, alienating older fans of the franchise by ignoring most of the lore, and failing to appeal to younger audiences by relying too heavily on violence and not spotlighting Grogu enough. The movie received mixed reviews and has a long way to go before it can be counted as a hit. According to reports, The Mandalorian and Grogu needs to gross between $500 million and $600 million worldwide in order to break even. This seems like a massive ask, given where it stands now.
