Recent large-scale setbacks have put Gal Gadot in a strange spot, but she has a new movie around the corner that may turn things around for her. It's one of those genre films that doesn't require much promotion to find an audience online, and Prime Video certainly has a proven history at doing this kind of movie well. In recent months, the streamer has delivered hit action films such as Playdate, The Wrecking Crew, and The Bluff, not to mention the theatrical movies that have found a large audience on Prime Video — this list includes Masters of the Universe and Mercy.
Gadot is coming off the big-budget misfire Snow White, which grossed just over $200 million worldwide against a reported budget of more than $330 million. Before that, she starred in Netflix's would-be franchise-starter Heart of Stone, which cost a reported $150 million. Netflix has pivoted away from big-budget tentpoles in recent months and has achieved major success with the kind of mid-budget movies that Prime Video has become a destination for. This year alone, Netflix has delivered a string of hits — the list includes Apex, Thrash, and The Rip— that have generated more than 100 million views. The sci-fi thriller War Machine, on the other hand, has emerged as one of Netflix's biggest-ever hits with more than 150 million views.

War Machine was headlined by Alan Ritchson, who has cemented himself as the biggest streaming star around. He will soon be seen in the theatrical release Runner, which, incidentally, shares its title with Gadot's new movie. Titled The Runner, the film has been directed by Kevin Macdonald, who primarily directs documentaries, but has also delivered hit narrative features such as The Last King of Scotland. The Runner also features Damian Lewis, and follows Gadot's character on a mission across London to locate her missing son. The movie's premise makes it sound like a combination of Liam Neeson's career-altering hit Taken, and the cult hit thriller Phone Booth, starring Colin Farrell in the lead role.
