After That Surprising Finale, Is Prime Video's 'The Runarounds' Getting a Season 2?

From The O.C. and Gossip Girl to Heartstopper and The Summer I Turned Pretty, nothing keeps audiences glued to the screen quite like young love and young heartbreak. Prime Video has another hit on its hands from Outer Banks creator Jonas Pate titled The Runarounds. The show follows a group of kids in Wilmington, North Carolina, who form the titular band in hopes of making it big before their summer after high school comes to an end.

The special thing about The Runarounds is that they are a real band outside the series. While Season 1 of the series ends with the band achieving their goal (landing a record contract), that’s only half the battle. Now they need to prove they can become the biggest band in the world, making Season 2 very necessary.

Will There Be a Season 2 of 'The Runarounds'?

While the series has not been renewed for Season 2 just yet, Pate has revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he has a five-season plan to tell the story of The Runarounds. Given the series still holds a spot in Prime Video's Top Ten TV Shows weeks after the whole season dropped on the platform, Season 2 seems like a safe bet. Regardless of a Season 2 renewal, the band continues to write music and perform in real life. Pate stated in an interview with Black Film and TV, "They’ve already started writing this record that they want to release before a potential season two. They’re super prolific. They write like crazy." All signs point to The Runarounds Season 2, and, as expected, it will be chock-full of new music from the band.

Season 1 of 'The Runarounds' Completed a Major Story Arc

Season 1 explored all the members of the band's personal lives, and while landing a record deal is a massive win, that won't make their problems magically disappear. The advance from the deal would likely help Charlie (William Lipton) and his family keep their home, but his dad Finn's (Hayes MacArthur) constant struggle to write his next novel is still hanging in the air. Maybe his son's creative leap of faith will inspire him to finally finish it. With Topher (Jeremy Yun) putting off Princeton to pursue the band, he is completely on the outs with his parents. Hopefully, that dynamic will change with the band's success, but there's always the risk of the band faltering (they did break up several times during Season 1), which his parents would love to hold over his head.

Neil, Bez, and Wyatt all have parents that need taking care of, and being in a full-time band takes up a lot of time, which begs the question —who will take care of them? Wyatt's (Jesse Golliher) mom, Wendy (Dani Deetté), was incredibly abusive to Wyatt, and now that he has real money, she will definitely come knocking to try and get a piece of that pie, even though she definitely doesn't deserve it. Neil (Axel Ellis) was supposed to take over the family business now that his father is ill, but what happens now since Neil signed a contract for the band? Bez's (Zendé Murdock) mom, Niecy (Timeca Seretti), is a diabetic and, frankly, sometimes forgets to take care of herself. She also sees Bez's musical aspirations as selfish. Now that The Runarounds will take even more of their time, it will be interesting to see how these complicated familial dynamics are continued.

Season 2 of 'The Runarounds' Should Hit the Road

Now that the band has put ink to paper on their new recording contract, they must get to work on writing and recording a full-length record to prove they are worth the investment the label has just made. The Runarounds Season 1 featured the band recording some live demos to help sell their sound to hopeful labels, but crafting a full album's worth of material and likely teaming up with a renowned producer will pose a new experience for the band — one with its own set of challenges, especially if the producer pushes the band in a direction they don't envision the band going in. Not to mention, Sophia Kinney (Lilah Pate) is included in that contract as a songwriter, adding another possible conflict between the band, the producer, and Sophia when trying to craft a hit record that could make or break their career. First impressions are key, especially in the music industry.

Season 2 could focus not only on the band facing the pressure of writing a hit record now that they’re signed, but also should focus on the band hitting the road to promote that record. The band rocked a fair, house parties, and even a wedding in Season 1, with one of the defining moments of the season being their performance at a legitimate venue. As any series does, a follow-up season needs to see the band continuing to level up, and the label will put them on a tour supporting a bigger act to help continue to grow The Runarounds' fanbase. The best bet for that band would be Lost Teen, the same band Bez tried out for but eventually ditched to pursue The Runarounds' mission to make it big. Touring is already stressful enough. Adding in a grudge with the headliner is the recipe for disaster, but at least it will make for good TV.

Putting The Runarounds on tour will explore the wild amount of work it is to perform day in and day out, and will showcase how each member of the band handles this newly found success. With Sophia being one of the main songwriters for the band and Neil's girlfriend, Bender (Marley Aliah), creating content for the band, both will hit the road with the band. The Runarounds made their dreams come true, but at what cost? How will it affect their future now that they have left college in the rearview to pursue their dreams? And how will relationships within and outside the band continue to evolve and fall apart as the band continues to reach new heights? Prime Video needs to renew The Runarounds for Season 2, so fans can get the answers to these questions.
