Fans waited over two years for the second season of X-Men ‘97, and as quickly as it came, it’s already over. Fans concerned about the future of the show have nothing to fret about, though — Marvel Studios boss Brad Winderbaum already told Collider that Seasons 3 and 4 of the show will be released in 2027 and 2028, respectively, eliminating any more two-year gaps between seasons. Even the second season of X-Men ‘97 was almost completely finished not long after Season 1 hit the air, and it won’t be until Season 3 hits the air next year that fans see the transition from showrunner Beau DeMayo, who was fired in 2024, to new showrunner Matthew Chauncey, who was brought in afterward to work on newer seasons.

Collider’s Maggie Lovitt recently moderated an X-Men ‘97 panel at FAN EXPO Canada for stars and creatives such as Larry Houston (Executive Producer), Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm), Cal Dodd (Wolverine), Randall Carpenter (Mystique), and more, where the group talked about everything from the show’s origins to future seasons. Lovitt asked Houston how the transition has gone with Chauncey taking over as showrunner in Season 3, and while one might think that there were some creative hiccups to work through, Houston confirms things have been “pretty seamless” for the most part:

“It’s been pretty seamless — I was introduced to Matthew [Chauncey] while we were doing Season 2. The only thing I’ve had to do — because with the new generation, everybody wants to do Zooms and put it up on the monitor where you’ve got all these little boxes and stuff — so a lot of times I have to insist: I like to come in and have lunch so we can actually talk face to face. But yeah, it’s been pretty good. We’re all on the same page, and they’re open to every idea they come up with, so it’s been a good working relationship.”

Could Future ‘X-Men ’97’ Seasons Ever Have More Episodes?

After the first season of X-Men ‘97 featured 10 episodes, Season 2 scaled things back to only nine earlier this year — this decision was certainly disappointing in the eyes of some fans, especially when factoring in the two-year gap between seasons. Speaking with Collider earlier this year, Brad Winderbaum ruled out future seasons of X-Men ‘97 having an increased episode count, citing that more episodes would result in a longer gap, and that he would rather have a shorter return time than more episodes. Official plans for X-Men ‘97 beyond Season 4 have not yet been announced, but with the show’s popularity and Marvel shifting its focus to animated content, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if it was around for years to come.
