VLC is the VideoLAN project's media player. It plays MPEG, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MOV, WMV, QuickTime, WebM, FLAC, MP3, Ogg/Vorbis files, DVDs, VCDs, podcasts, and multimedia streams from various network sources.

VLC can also be used as a streaming server that duplicates the stream it reads and multicasts them through the network to other clients, or serves them through HTTP.

VLC has support for on-the-fly transcoding of audio and video formats, either for broadcasting purposes or for movie format transformations. Celluloid, like every front-end for Mplayer, is incapable of reading menu's of either DVD's or Blu-Ray's. That makes it useless for many. VlC exceeds at this tasks.

The UI is a bit dated. I don't see a point in using it when Celluloid exists and is preinstalled in Mint. Celluloid has a much better UI, while doing the same thing.

completely unable to properly display mp4-video files from my phone. Makes it completely useless. The built-in Celluloid-app from Mint is miles better

Couldn't play music or audio via Rhytmbox then i remembered this app exists: absolutely the best.

It is an absolutely excellent video player and should probably be your default and only video player if you have it installed. Would always recommend this gem of an App for anyone who wishes to watch videos of all formats easily.

VLC is my goto on every new OS that I have a user account on. I have many systems I have accounts on due to work. I end up installing VLC on any I spend any time on.

VLC war und ist der mit Abstand beste Videoplayer auf dem Markt. Kostenlos, mächtig, individualisierbar. Kommt mit unzähligen Codecs klar, direkt einsatzbereit. Was will man mehr?
