The most secure banknote features are the ones built into the substrate itself. 🖼️🔒 Protecting public currency means outpacing the remarkable evolution of commercial imaging technology. As standard ink-jet and toner-based printers become increasingly precise and versatile, counterfeiting is shifting from specialized criminal operations to readily accessible technology. This technological leap changes the fundamental engineering of cash, revealing a distinct difference in substrate architecture: Intrinsic Security (#Cotton): Natural fiber-based substrates allow features to be integrated directly during the paper-manufacturing process. Watermarks, sophisticated security threads, and UV fibers become part of the material's structural DNA. This creates an inseparable "key-and-lock" relationship between the substrate and the subsequent print layers. Superficial Security (#Polymer): Because synthetic plastic substrates are entirely non-porous, public features cannot be embedded within the core material. Instead, they must be applied on top of a transparent film. The vulnerability lies in the architecture: as commercial printing technology advances, replicating superficial elements becomes significantly less complex. Ultimately, counterfeit protection isn’t achieved by simply accumulating a high volume of features. True security is a matter of structural integration – ensuring the substrate, the print, and the feature integration operate as a single, inseparable system. We got a call from Mr Hill, a savvy UK bank customer in his 80ies. We answered and developed a new product because of it. ☎️ Living with severe arthritis made paying at checkout a frustrating experience for him. Smooth plastic cards and tight wallets create a physical barrier for millions of hands. So, he took action. He filed small notches into the edges of his cards to get a reliable grip. It worked for his hands, but the modification could sever the internal contactless antenna. When he called our UK office, we listened. We invited him into our local facility to study his physical prototype. Our engineers paired his real-world experience with our manufacturing expertise. The result is the G+D Convego Dexterity Notch. While cooperating with a single customer solved an immediate problem, this feature serves a global need. Global card circulation will reach 31 billion by 2029. By 2050, the global population over age 65 will hit 1.6 billion. Physical challenges like arthritis will become far more common, making true accessibility an essential operational standard for the financial industry.
