Started at the corner of Temple and Alameda, where it seemed like about equal numbers of press and protesters, and even more LAPD. After crossing Temple, press complied with orders to get on the sidewalk. At least one LAPD officer shoved a photographer on the sidewalk for no apparent reason. Eventually LAPD kettled the dozen press in the MOCA Geffen parking lot with just a couple of protesters. LAPD had vastly larger numbers and could have easily handled the protesters while letting press go. Press were easily identifiable by large cameras, including one with an over-the-shoulder TV camera, and ample badging. Repeated shoving by LAPD moved press to 1st between Central and San Pedro. Ultimately they were as many as six blocks from where press thought the actual dispersal order was supposed to apply to. Press were denied access to see what police were doing with actual protesters, including an alleged arrest of a protester too far to clearly make out, but LAPD instead managed to let Metro riders through. "Less lethal" rounds were fired into the crowd. I managed to get out of the line of scrimmage but was pushed and shoved as people began to panic. At the intersection of Alameda and Los Angeles, the police paused to reposition themselves and put on gas masks. Again, protestors were split into sections, depending on which street they were kettled to -- I was recording near the overpass when they began to shoot tear gas into the crowd and aim "less lethal" indiscriminately. And one photographer behind that protester photographing them. The rest of the protesters were at least a block and a half back. The protester was trying to fire a firework at the police and they responded by unleashing a bunch of less lethals at them. Once they were done with that protester, about 10 seconds later, one of them fires at me with a 40mm, And hits me in the thigh. I was clearly identified as press with both press on my chest as well as my LAPD and lasd press passes on my neck.
