Glad to see Gene's typeface is getting some notice

He was asked to design an Asian typeface.

Unreadable? The letters are not distorted, but are augmented.

Cultural appropriation? That has been going on since time immemorial.

Do you eat tacos, pasta, sushi? Buy IKEA furniture?

Take a look at Toulouse Latrec's work - a lot of Asian influence.

Its not appropriation, its appreciation.

It's also worth noting that Heather's original logo was made from photocopies of a book of typefaces she found in the library – I suspect it was Victorian Display Alphabets: 100 Complete Fonts by Dan X. Solo.

I wasn't involved with the artwork for Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs, but the logo type was most likely a cleaned up vector I made from Heather’s artwork which I gave to John Yates when the band first started working with him back in 2006 or so. In regards to our font Damnette 97, the idea was to capture the analog, hand-made look of Heather's design style which became a hallmark for the band. She would often use copies of copies of the logo from previous designs which would degrade and distort with each generation – something I always loved, but is usually overlooked or forgone in the digital age. I also felt that the existing digital versions of Lafayette were all lacking in different ways, so I wanted to establish an official version for the band moving forward.

Are you sure the typeface was Pump? If yes, then it looks like you redrew the letterforms, customizing them quite a bit. I’ve made a comparison using the digital Pump Medium. Its “lazy s” is a good deal narrower than the letterform in the logo:

Pump Medium is shown in black, with the c rotated by 17°.

There was a whole range of other typefaces similar to Pump at the time. As far as I can tell, though, Burko, Harry, Blippo, Bauhaus Geometric, Expressa, and Churchward Design are no perfect matches either.
