Than Ajahn Suchart Abhijāto was born in Thailand in 1947 and received a Bachelor's of Science degree in Civil Engineering from California State University before returning to Thailand to manage an ice cream shop in Pattaya. Receiving a copy of [Wheel 186](https://www.bps.lk/olib/wh/wh186_Nyanaponika-etal_Three-Basic-Facts-of-Existence--I-Anicca.html){:target="_blank" ga-event-value="2.1"} from a tourist, he realized the importance of meditation and wrote to the BPS requesting more. He received from them a copy of the [Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta](https://noblepath.info/PDFs/Nyanasatta_The-Foundations-Of-Mindfulness.pdf){:target="_blank" ga-event-value="0.35"} which he then chanted and practiced diligently. Leaving his job in 1974 to meditate full time, he was ordained at Wat Bowon by [Somdet Yan]({% link _authors/yan.md %}) himself in 1975 thanks to the help of [Bhikkhu Khantipalo]({% link _authors/mills-laurence.md %}) before traveling to Wat Pa Baan Taad where he would train under [Luangta Maha Bua]({% link _authors/boowa.md %}) for the next nine years.

36+
> They were in the Periods of Dvaravati, Lop Buri and Lan Chang.
37+
> The Buddha images were popularly built in many different styles such as concentration style, double-miracle style, nag-over-his-head style, blessing style, world-opening style, relatives-stop style, dharma consideration style and others.
38+
> In addition, they popularly made 4,9,12 or 168 votive tablets on each of a large number of baked-clay plates.
39+
> Significant characteristics of the Buddha images were different based on the outside influences they received.
40+
> Conclusion: The Buddha images of the Dvaravati Period were influenced from India in the art styles of Kupta, Pala, Sena and Pallava to central of Thailand.
41+
> Those of the Lop Buri Period were influenced by Khmer art.

> This article provides a philosophical overview of some of the central Buddhist positions and arguments regarding animal welfare.
25+
> It introduces the Buddha's teaching of ahiṃsā or nonviolence and rationally reconstructs five arguments from the context of early Indian Buddhism that aim to justify its extension to animals.
26+
> These arguments appeal to the capacity and desire not to suffer, the virtue of compassion, as well as Buddhist views on the nature of self, karma, and reincarnation.
27+
> This article also considers how versions of these arguments have been applied to address a practical issue in Buddhist ethics; whether Buddhists should be vegetarian.

> AbstractThis essay compares and contrasts the goals of Buddhist journalism with the general traits of the dominant/Western news paradigm to demonstrate the gap between the moral aspirations of the Orient and the instrumental materialistic traits revealed through the performance of the dominant/Western paradigm, which has even marginalised the moral imperatives of the Decalogue The essay goes on to assess the unique opportunities offered by Buddhist journalism, which no other genre of journalism – developmental, civic/public, peace – is able to offer to improve the quality of journalism, journalists and their profession.

> Findings supporting the clinical applications of mindfulness have stimulated research into other meditation techniques.
28+
> In particular, there is growing scientific enquiry into the effectiveness of Buddhist-derived compassion techniques for treating a wide variety of health-related disorders.
29+
> Compassion-Based Interventions (CBIs) usually employ compassion meditation as a central therapeutic technique and invariably follow a secular format (with minimal use of Buddhist terminology).
30+
> Compassion meditation is described as the meditative development of affective empathy as part of the visceral sharing of others’ suffering.1 The technique involves the patient using meditative imagery and/or breathing practices in order to intentionally direct compassionate feelings towards 1) themselves (known as self-compassion); 2) an individual (for example, a friend or person deemed to be a cause of distress, such as a difficult work colleague); 3) a group of individuals (or ‘living beings’ in general); and/or 4) a situation (for example, the devastation caused by a natural disaster or war).1 While cultivating such feelings, the patient has conviction that they are …

> This essay proposes a pedagogical ethic of love based on the four brahma-viharas -- also called the divine abodes-- of Theravada Buddhism.
25+
> Witnessing, Kelly Oliver’s theory of mutual subjectivity, finds practical expression in the brahma-viharas, a comprehensive way to train the mind and heart to sustain an ethic of love in all of our relationships.
26+
> Together, witnessing and the brahma-viharas offer an approach whereby we may choose to love students and to cultivate more open, responsive and egalitarian relations with them, in spite of academic asymmetries of power.
27+
> In perplexing or vexing interactions with students, I draw strength from three of the four divine abodes: metta (lovingkindness), karuna (compassion), and upekkha (equanimity).
28+
> Consistently applying the contemplative practices associated with these states begins to disentangle the threads of complicated social relations.
