I can't find any further information about the Public mirror badge.

Warning

Don't tell me to use git push --mirror. It never adds a badge.

Creating a mirror repository on GitHub means making an exact copy of another Git repository (including all branches, tags, and history). Here’s a step-by-step guide to do it:

Step 1: Clone the Source Repo as a Bare Repository

A bare clone is used to mirror everything without working files.

git clone --bare https://github.com/source-owner/source-repo.git

This will create a folder like source-repo.git in your local system.

Step 2: Create a New Empty Repo on GitHub

1. Go to https://github.com/new
2. Create a new repository (e.g., target-repo) under your account
3. Do not initialize it with README, .gitignore, or license

Step 3: Push the Mirror to the New GitHub Repo

cd source-repo.git
git push --mirror https://github.com/your-username/target-repo.git

This pushes all branches, tags, and refs to your new repository.

Step 4 (Optional): Delete Local Bare Repo

If you want to update the mirror later (e.g., sync changes again):

git fetch -p origin

To send a mirror of your repo to another do this,
on your computer do this: git clone --mirror https://github.com/your-org/repo-private.git
then: you will have a folder like : repo-private.git
then in this new foder, add the new remote : git remote add new https://github.com/new/new-repo.git

and now you can add the changes if necessary and push git push --mirror new

git push --mirror github

Here’s how you can mirror a repo yourself:

Create a new empty repo on GitHub (no README, .gitignore, or license).

Clone the upstream repo as a mirror:

git clone --mirror https://original-repo-url.git
cd repo-name.git

Push it to your GitHub repo:

git remote set-url --push origin https://github.com/your-username/your-repo.git
git push --mirror

To update the mirror in future:

git fetch -p origin
git push --mirror

👉 The “Public mirror” badge you see on some repos isn’t user-controlled, it’s applied by GitHub itself. You can still maintain your own synced mirror using the above steps, even though it won’t show that badge.
