Difficulties installing Laravel Filament v4 on my codespace (Laravel 12 installation is OK)

Hi (Newbie question),

I am able to install Laravel 12 on my code space, but whenever I try to install Filament v3 or Filament v4 on top of it, I run into the error message on the screenshot.

I enabled the PHP int'l extension in the php.ini file, and xdebug.ini seems OK to me.

Could someone give me a set of instructions (or tutorial link) on how to properly install Filament v4 or Filament v3, either in my codespace or on my local machine (I am working on Windows 10) ?

I am running into the exact same problem on my local machine, even though all needed extensions have been enabled.

All needed composer commands were run after all files modifications.

(Despite enabling the intl extension , see below , the problem is not solved.)

/usr/local/php/8.3.14/ini/php.ini-development -----------------------> intl extension is enabled

I followed your suggestions but it unfortunately still does not work.

Here's a summary (see attached screenshots):

Your steps:

1. run php -m ---> int'l not listed

2. enable int'l extension in Windows --> did that in all php.ini, php.ini-development, php.ini-production files
   wherever present

3. composer require filament/filament:"^4.0" ----> produces error message (see screenshot)

No need for step 4 as step 3 fails

4. php artisan filament:install

5. php artisan optimize:clear --> did that

6. If you still get errors, delete vendor folder and composer.lock then run composer install again --> step 3 still fails.

One question:

Can you comment on that ?

To install the PHP Intl extension on Windows, find your php.ini file, add the line extension=php_intl.dll to it, and then restart your web server (like Apache) or your application's development server (like Local) for the changes to take effect. If you get a "missing .dll" error, you may also need to copy the required icu files from the PHP ext folder to the web server's bin directory.

1. Identify PHP binary and ini used by Composer/CLI
   php --ini
   where php (Windows) or which php (WSL/Linux)
   Note the Loaded Configuration File path and PHP version.

2. Enable intl in the correct php.ini

   • Open the Loaded Configuration File from step 1.
   • Add or uncomment the line:
     Windows: extension=php_intl.dll
     Linux: extension=intl
   • Save the file.

3. Verify extension_dir and DLLs (Windows)
   php -i | findstr extension_dir (Windows)
   php -i | grep extension_dir (WSL/Linux)

   • Ensure php_intl.dll exists in that directory.

4. Make ICU DLLs discoverable on Windows (if you get missing .dll errors)
   Option A: Copy ICU DLLs (icudt*.dll, icuin*.dll, icuuc*.dll) from the PHP folder to C:\Windows\System32 or to your web server bin folder (e.g., xampp\apache\bin).
   Option B: Add the PHP folder (where the DLLs live) to the Windows PATH, then restart your terminal/IDE.

   • Ensure the Visual C++ Redistributable required by your PHP build is installed.
   • Restart terminal/IDE after PATH changes.

5. Confirm intl is loaded by the CLI

   • Restart your terminal.
   • Run: php -m | findstr intl (Windows)
     or: php -m | grep intl (WSL/Linux)
   • If intl appears, CLI PHP is ready.

6. Ensure Composer uses the same PHP

   • Confirm where php points: where php (Windows) or which php (WSL/Linux).
   • If Composer uses a different PHP, adjust PATH or run Composer with the correct binary:
     Windows example: C:\path\to\php.exe composer.phar require ...
     Linux example: php composer.phar require ...

7. Clean up failed install state

   • Remove previous artifacts:
     rm -rf vendor composer.lock
     (or delete vendor and composer.lock in Explorer on Windows)
   • Clear Composer cache:
     composer clear-cache

8. Reinstall Filament
   composer require filament/filament:"^4.0" -W
   If successful:
   php artisan filament:install
   php artisan optimize:clear

9. Codespaces / devcontainer / Docker

   • Add php-intl to your Dockerfile or devcontainer setup and rebuild the container.
   • Example (Debian/Ubuntu): RUN apt-get update && apt-get install -y php8.3-intl
     (replace 8.3 with your PHP version)
   • Rebuild the Codespace/devcontainer so the extension is present in the image.

10. Use WSL on Windows (recommended alternative)

    • Install PHP and intl inside WSL:
      sudo apt update && sudo apt install php-intl php-cli
    • Use Composer from WSL so the Linux PHP environment is used.

11. Troubleshooting checklist

    • php --ini shows the ini you edited.
    • php -m lists intl.
    • composer diagnose shows no platform extension errors.
    • If still failing, run: composer why-not filament/filament
    • Avoid --ignore-platform-req=ext-intl except for temporary testing; it bypasses checks but can cause runtime failures.

12. Quick Windows tips

    • XAMPP/WAMP often have separate CLI and Apache php.ini files — edit the one shown by php --ini.
    • If Apache loads intl but CLI does not, copy ICU DLLs to Apache bin or ensure CLI PHP has the DLLs.
