  • Howrah at the Heart of India’s ₹Rail Capacity Expansion 🚆 𝐇𝐨𝐰𝐫𝐚𝐡 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, Kolkata’s key rail gateway, is set to play an important role in Indian Railways’ plan to 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐫-𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐬 spanning nearly 𝟏𝟏,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐤𝐦. These corridors currently carry around 𝟒𝟏% of India’s total railway traffic despite accounting for just 𝟏𝟔% of the network. For 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐥, Howrah’s strategic position stands out. The station sits at the intersection of three major national corridors — 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐡𝐢–𝐇𝐨𝐰𝐫𝐚𝐡, 𝐇𝐨𝐰𝐫𝐚𝐡–𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚𝐢 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐚𝐢–𝐇𝐨𝐰𝐫𝐚𝐡. The 𝐃𝐞𝐥𝐡𝐢–𝐇𝐨𝐰𝐫𝐚𝐡 corridor alone stretches around 1,400 km and handles more than 120 passenger and nearly 100 freight trains every day. The Howrah–Chennai corridor extends for around 1,653 km. Four-laning these routes will significantly expand capacity across some of India’s busiest passenger and freight corridors, strengthening Howrah’s role as a critical gateway for eastern India.
