Duke Medical Center Library & Archives News

The Medical Center Library & Archives will be closed on Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day. Library staff will be unavailable, and regular hours and services will resume on Tuesday, September 8. 

During the long weekend, the library building will remain accessible to School of Medicine students and faculty, School of Nursing students and faculty, Watts College of Nursing affiliates, and Graduate Medical Education trainees.

If you run into issues accessing these resources off-campus, please use the VPN for off-campus access.

The Center for Open Science (COS) has announced significant upcoming changes to the Open Science Framework (OSF) Projects platform. Starting November 16, 2026, users will no longer be able to create new OSF Projects or components, and beginning February 19, 2027, existing projects will become read-only while remaining publicly accessible and discoverable. These changes may affect researchers who use OSF Projects for collaboration, file management, storage, and sharing research outputs.

The resource brings together policy documents, reports, briefs, and other grey literature from governments, think tanks, NGOs, and international organizations around the world.

As summer comes to a close, Medical Center Library & Archives Service Desk will return to regular hours beginning August 17th. During the summer, the Service Desk operated on reduced hours, and we appreciate everyone's flexibility during that time.

9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Library staff will once again be available during these hours to assist with research questions, circulation services, book pickups, and other library needs.

The Duke University School of Medicine's third year offers M.D. students an opportunity to immerse themselves in research and scholarly inquiry. The outcomes of these projects are showcased each year at the Medical Student Research Symposium.

Now in its 57th year, the symposium was held August 6-7 in the Trent Semans Center for Health Education and highlighted the exceptional scholarly achievements of Duke medical students. Posters from this year's symposium are now available in the Medical Center Archives' MEDSpace digital repository, which preserves and provides access to the institution's scholarly output.

On May 25, 2026, NIH grant applicants were required to use a new abbreviated Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Plan format described in NOT-OD-26-046.  The updated format replaces most narrative responses with structured yes/no questions to reduce administrative burden and support more consistent compliance monitoring. 

On July 29, 2026, NIH released additional implementation guidance in NOT-OD-26-100. The new guidance expands the use of the updated format beyond new applicants and establishes a pathway for pending and active awards to transition to the structured DMS plan format.

The Duke community was saddened to learn of the recent passing of Dr. James R. Urbaniak. He was a pioneering Master Surgeon, devoted mentor, and exceptional leader.

Dr. Urbaniak graduated from the Duke University School of Medicine in 1962 and also completed his residency training in Orthopaedics at Duke in 1969. Before completion, he served a tour of duty from 1963 to 1965 in the U.S. Navy as the Attending Physician to the United States Congress and Supreme Court in Washington, D.C.

He joined Duke's faculty in 1969 as an Assistant Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery and was promoted to full professor in 1977. From 1985 to 2002, he served as the Chief of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery. He had a distinguished career at Duke being awarded the Virginia Flowers Baker…
