Country up-and-comer Graham Barham found viral success by taking key genre trends from the last decade and change and distilling them into one sound, which he dubs “club country”. The R&B influence of early Sam Hunt, the crossover pop of Florida Georgia Line and the down-and-out dirtbaggery of Morgan Wallen all gel together here on this EP from Barham, which follows a string of one-offs from the Louisiana native, like the hit “OIL MONEY”. Highlights on WHISKEY RAIN include “WRITE IT IN RED”, an autobiographical celebration of the country life that recalls “Dirt Road Anthem”-era Jason Aldean, and “WTH JUST HAPPENED?”, a shapeshifting ballad—rootsy verses give way to 808-inflected choruses—with shades of Eric Church and Jelly Roll. Tyler Hubbard is the lone guest, joining Barham on the hip-hop- and EDM-inspired title track.
