B.O.A.T.S

B.O.A.T.S

On their joint album, Focalistic and Ch’cco—members of the collective Pitori Super League alongside Pabi Cooper and M.J—showcase a chemistry built over years of friendship and collaboration, hence the title, B.O.A.T.S (“Based on a true story”). Those who understand Spitori (Pretoria slang) will be captivated by the witty wordplay, but, for everyone else, the flows and swagger will do just fine. Focalistic and Ch’cco have interesting ways of delivering their lines, from chants (“Duku Duku”) to the effortless melodies of album opener, “Beyoncé Babe”, their first love song together. While guests including Nkosazana Daughter, Harmonize and Scotts Maphuma contribute textures to the project’s rich palette, Focalistic and Ch’cco remain faithful to their signature sound; Pretoria’s bacardi with its crackling snares, embellished with elements of other South African genres like kwaito, bubblegum and traces of Shangaan electro. That’s best demonstrated on “Haena Wrongo”, featuring Sims Noreng and Pabi Cooper, a song whose production is a masterclass in layering different sounds and vocals. As a result, listening to B.O.A.T.S is often an exercise of in picking up Easter eggs from references in the lyrics to the samples and interpolations in the sonics, handled by producers including Mellow & Sleazy, Yumbs, DJ Maphorisa and Vigro Deep.
