A scam is sweeping LinkedIn that specifically hunts technical people. It's organized, convincing, and built to get malware onto YOUR machine. How it works: Someone messages you as a "recruiter" or "Head of HR." The profile looks real — sometimes it's the stolen identity of a real employee. They make you feel wanted — warm questions, flattery, then a salary too good to ignore. Suddenly it feels like the perfect job. They refuse video. Every attempt to move to a call gets dodged. (Reverse variant: they send a "meeting app" to download — that app IS the malware.) They send a "technical assessment" — usually a GitHub repo. "Just clone it, run it locally, share your feedback." THE TRAP: The moment you run npm install, pip install, or start the app, a hidden script executes. These repos bury obfuscated code in config files or in package "postinstall" hooks. It can: drain crypto wallets & browser wallet extensions steal passwords, keychains, session tokens, SSH keys encrypt your files and demand ransom This is a real, organized campaign that has hit developers across tech and crypto. THE TRUTH: No legitimate hiring process asks you to run unknown code on your machine. A real code review happens live — the team shares THEIR screen. You're never asked to execute their project blind. HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF: Verify the human on the company's OWN site; email them directly to confirm the person exists. New profiles with few connections = red flag. Insist on a video call early. Refusal to ever show their face is a deal-breaker. NEVER run untrusted code on your main machine. Read package.json "scripts" (esp. pre/postinstall) first, and run only inside a throwaway VM or container. Keep crypto off your dev machine — hardware wallet, seed phrase never in plaintext. Slow down. "Dream salary + do it now + run this code" = walk away. IF YOU'VE ALREADY RUN ONE: Disconnect from the internet. From a SEPARATE clean device, move any crypto and rotate every password (email, exchanges, GitHub). Revoke sessions, API & SSH keys; reset 2FA. Run a full malware scan — consider wiping the machine. Recruiters reaching out is normal. But the second one wants you to EXECUTE something, the interview is over. Stay sharp. All of them are built for completely different jobs. But so many people keep opening whichever one loaded last and hoping for the best. That's how you end up paying premium prices for something Sonnet 5 could've handled for free, Or short-changing a job that needed the bigger model from the start. Here's the breakdown, model by model, because picking the wrong one is either wasting your time or wasting your money: 🟣 Sonnet 5 What it is: ↳ The new default model, fast, cheap, and close to Opus level on most everyday work. How to use it: ↳ It's already the default on Free and Pro plans, just start typing. When to use it: ↳ Writing posts, first drafts, quick research, brainstorming hooks, day to day content work. Best practice: ↳ Give it a clear brief and a voice guide upfront. Avoid: ↳ Expecting it to handle huge, multi-day builds. That's not its job. 🔵 Opus 4.8 What it is: ↳ The deeper thinking model, built for complex, multi-step, agentic work. How to use it: ↳ Select it directly, and use effort control to dial reasoning up or down depending on the job. When to use it: ↳ Building a multi-step content system, longer strategy documents, anything with several moving parts, and bigger one-off builds. Best practice: ↳ Use higher effort only when getting it right the first time matters more than speed. Avoid: ↳ Running everything on max effort by default. A lot of tasks don't need it, and it costs more. ⚫️ Fable 5 What it is: ↳ Anthropic's most capable model, a tier above Opus, built for the biggest jobs. How to use it: ↳ Select it for standout jobs, give it a full brief up front rather than a one-liner, since it works best when the whole task is scoped out first. When to use it: ↳ A full funnel or website rebuild, restructuring an entire content operation, anything that would otherwise take you weeks by hand. Best practice: ↳ Plan the full job before it starts, ask it to check its own work as it goes, expect it to take longer since it's doing more. Avoid: ↳ Using it for small daily tasks. That's the fastest way to burn through usage on something Sonnet 5 would've handled for free. One more thing worth knowing: ↳ Fable 5 got briefly pulled in June over a government export control issue, not Anthropic backing off it. (It's back as of the 1st of July, running on usage credits.) 3 models, with 3 completely different jobs. Stop overpaying for a job Sonnet 5 could've done, and undershooting one that needed Fable 5. Match them properly, and Claude stops feeling hit or miss.
