3 things that surprised me:
1. The Page family has owned the property at the corner of Becks Run and East Carson Street for more than a century. The business we now know as Page’s opened as Page Dairy Mart in 1951 and was the brainchild of Charles Alexander Page. He had encountered soft serve ice cream on a trip to Florida. He brought the idea back home to Pittsburgh.
2. Margie is the fourth generation of her family to own the iconic ice cream spot. She’d initially thought she’d go into nursing but then decided to buy the business from her parents with her husband. Margie’s dad, Chuck, stops by often to keep tabs on the shop. He’s been delighted by her success.
3. Page’s regularly goes through 100 gallons of ice cream in a day. With only 700 square feet and little storage space, they have to get their soft serve mix delivered about every other day. Last year, though, they built two additional chilled storage units behind the shop so that they can stockpile ingredients and product.
One thing that didn’t make the final cut: Margie is one of five children. She said the timing was just right for her, rather than one of her siblings, to take over the business. She does give all her siblings free ice cream, though.
