Australia is where Rustic Pathways started, in 1983, and it has the longest tenure of any destination. Three Student Travel programs have run here: Australia: Seven Wonders (16 days, $11,995), Australia: Animal Conservation (16 days, $5,995) and Australia: Service & Adventure Down Under (9 days, $3,495). The three programs cover different parts of the country. Seven Wonders runs a national circuit from Sydney through the Red Centre to Cairns and the Daintree. Animal Conservation is based on the Sunshine Coast at Australia Zoo, then moves to Byron Bay and Toowoomba. Service & Adventure Down Under stays on the Sunshine Coast, with day trips to Noosa and Moreton Island.
16 days from Sydney to the Red Centre to the Great Barrier Reef. Students run a service day in Sydney with Our Big Kitchen, walk the base of Uluru and Kata Tjuta, camp at Kings Canyon, snorkel two Great Barrier Reef sites, and work with a wallaby rescue centre and the Rainforest Trust in the Daintree. 15 service hours, capped at 12 students.
Best for: Teens who want the widest span of the country in one program, from city to desert to reef.
16 days built around four days of hands-on work at Australia Zoo, shadowing keepers, preparing food and enrichment, cleaning enclosures and touring the Wildlife Hospital. Students then surf and sea kayak at Byron Bay before three days at WRREA, a volunteer-run wildlife rehabilitation centre in Toowoomba, bottle-feeding joeys and caring for echidnas. 30 service hours, capped at 14 students.
Best for: Teens interested in zoology, ecology, conservation or veterinary science.

9 days from a beach base house on the Sunshine Coast. Two surf lessons with Aussie coaches, a basketball coaching clinic for athletes with disabilities, an afternoon with an indigenous family learning dreamtime stories and boomerang throwing, a day at Australia Zoo, and a snorkel cruise over the Moreton Island shipwrecks. 5 service hours.
Best for: Teens who want a shorter first international program at the lowest price point of the three.

Australia gives students a country that spans reef, rainforest and desert without a language barrier. Programs work with Aboriginal guides and families on Country, at Mossman Gorge with the Kuku Yalanji, on a bush tucker tour in the Red Centre, and through dreamtime stories, boomerang throwing and didgeridoo with an indigenous family on the Sunshine Coast. Service is concrete: preparing meals with Our Big Kitchen for refugee communities and people experiencing homelessness in Sydney, planting and clearing weeds with the Rainforest Trust in the Daintree, and cleaning enclosures and feeding animals at a wildlife rehabilitation centre in Toowoomba. Australia is also where the company started, in 1983.
Rooms are gender-separated across all three programs. Seven Wonders uses dormitory-style rooms for 5 to 6 students, youth hostels in Uluru and Cairns, and two nights in safari tents with permanent beds at King Creek Station, a working cattle station on the way to Kings Canyon. Animal Conservation and Service & Adventure both start at a Rustic Pathways base house on the Sunshine Coast, then move to dorm rooms in Byron Bay, shared cabins for 4 to 10 students in Toowoomba, and a Brisbane hostel for the final night.
Days pair a morning block with an afternoon block and a group discussion in the evening. A Seven Wonders day in Cairns is a morning at Kuranda Markets and an afternoon of tree planting and enclosure building at a wallaby rescue centre. An Animal Conservation day at Australia Zoo starts before the 09:00 public opening, preparing enclosures and food alongside a keeper. A Service & Adventure day is a surf lesson in the morning and a community project in the afternoon, then dinner at a Surf Club. Every program closes with Rustic Ties, a reflection activity students take home.
Students are supervised by trained Rustic Pathways Program Leaders, with a median of one staff member for every 4.37 students and no program exceeding 7 students per staff member. Program Leaders complete a four-month vetting process, are first-aid certified, and every program carries at least one leader with three or more years of field experience. Water activities are snorkel-based and run from vetted operators. There is no unsupervised time in public areas.
Service is logged and specific. Seven Wonders carries 15 hours across meal preparation with Our Big Kitchen in Sydney, a wallaby rescue centre outside Cairns, and seed collection and tree planting with the Rainforest Trust in the Daintree. Animal Conservation carries 30 hours across Australia Zoo and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Toowoomba. Service & Adventure carries 5 hours, including a basketball coaching clinic for athletes with disabilities.
Students finish having worked alongside zookeepers, wildlife rehabilitators, conservation crews and Aboriginal guides rather than watching from a distance. Every program ends with a closing discussion and Rustic Ties, where students record what they learned so they can carry it back to their own communities.
Most students travel without knowing anyone. Camping in the Red Centre, standing up on a surfboard for the first time at Byron Bay or on the Sunshine Coast, and snorkeling open water on the Great Barrier Reef all put students in unfamiliar conditions with staff nearby but not intervening.
Aboriginal guides and families lead the cultural content directly. Students take a bush tucker tour with an indigenous Australian in the Red Centre, are welcomed by the Kuku Yalanji at Mossman Gorge, and spend an afternoon with an indigenous family on the Sunshine Coast hearing dreamtime stories and learning to throw a boomerang.
Australia Zoo and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Toowoomba put students in enclosures doing keeper work, not on a viewing platform. The Daintree and Cairns projects put them in planting and weed-removal crews with local partners.
Service ranges from 5 to 30 hours depending on the program, and each project is set by a local partner with a live need rather than arranged for the group. Every project is followed by a debrief the same evening.
Many return home steadier, more capable outdoors, and more curious about the places they have been.

No. Great Barrier Reef activities on Australia: Seven Wonders are snorkel-based, at two outer-reef sites and again on the inner reef at Cape Tribulation. No scuba certification is required or offered. Students should be comfortable swimming in open water.
Groups average 15 students and most Rustic Pathways programs cap at 20, with a median of one staff member for every 4.37 students and a maximum of 7 students per staff member. Australia: Seven Wonders caps at 12 students and Australia: Animal Conservation caps at 14.

Students join a chaperoned group flight from a U.S. gateway airport, with a Rustic Pathways Flight Leader travelling with the group. International students arrange their own flights and Rustic Pathways coordinates airport pickup. International airfare is not included in the program tuition.
Lodging, all meals, in-country transport, all activities and excursions, and 24 hour staff support. Not included: international airfare, travel insurance, and personal spending money of roughly 150 to 200 US dollars.

Moderate. Students hike the base of Uluru and the rim of Kings Canyon on Seven Wonders, trek Mt. Ngun Ngun and sea kayak on Animal Conservation, and surf on Service and Adventure Down Under. No advanced fitness is required, but participants should be comfortable being active for several hours in warm conditions.
Yes. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and common food allergies are accommodated with advance notice. Dietary needs are collected during enrollment.
Wi-Fi is available at most accommodations, though speed and signal vary, and it is limited in the Red Centre. Students keep their phones and may contact home as often as they like.
