Marvel Announces Iron Man’s New Era With Critically Acclaimed Writer At The Helm

A brand-new Iron Man game was announced a while ago, and a leaked trailer has unfortunately spoiled the reveal of what it will look like. But while it obviously would’ve been favorable to first see this trailer when it’s polished and intended to be shared publicly, it’s admittedly a massive boon to see that Marvel’s Iron Man is still in development—you can never be 100% sure of how far along in development a game is or if its head is in a guillotine these days, after all.

Plus, it’s phenomenal how transparent and positive EA Motive’s instantaneous response was to the leak. Now that a full Marvel’s Iron Man trailer has leaked, incomplete as it is, it’s a wonderful reminder of the kind of quality that the game will have with an incredible comic book writer in its arsenal.

Ryan North Is Writing Iron Man Again, Just Not In Comics

Three years ago, in October 2023, Marvel Comics writer Ryan North—who’s currently penning the ongoing mainline, Earth-616 Fantastic Four series—announced that he is part of the writing team on EA Motive’s Iron Man game.

“It’s no secret that I love Iron Man and have written my heart out for Tony Stark every chance I’ve had,” North gushed about the character in his original social media post, demonstrating further that Marvel’s Iron Man’s story and character work is in the best hands imaginable. Comic talent this terrific should help bolster the game’s writing exponentially.

It’s curious that North, of all Marvel Comics writers, was cherry-picked for the writing team of this game. It’s unknown if there are any other high-profile Marvel creatives joining him, but Nolan has gone on record saying how he’d like to write more Iron Man, and this is a wonderful opportunity to scratch that itch.

An Original Iron Man Game Means All-New Lore

But that’s not all that’s fascinating about this choice, as it may speak to a surprising route EA Motive may want to go with Marvel’s Iron Man’s narrative. For instance, one of North’s most significant Iron Man writing credits is the one-shot Darkhold: Iron Man #1.

North’s contributions to the writing in Marvel’s Iron Man are unlikely to be as drenched in body horror as Darkhold: Iron Man, to be fair. That said, EA Motive’s Dead Space remake is a sensational survival-horror game, and, depending on how much the studio leans into those roots, the nightmarish tone of Darkhold: Iron Man would pair beautifully with the Dead Space remake’s unnerving atmosphere to craft a stunning cocktail.

Of course, the trailer doesn’t seem to evoke much beyond Marvel Cinematic Universe synergy via what little of a slice we see of Marvel’s Iron Man’s depiction of Tony Stark (the shot of Tony scanning the HUD from inside the faceplate, specifically). We see a batch of iconic Iron Man supervillains, but nothing suggests the game’s story will descend into horror. Only time will tell when we’ll see this trailer as it was meant to be shown, and how well-written this new Iron Man game will be.
