Honor Guard veteran — or still in Corps training?
In an interview with ScreenRant's Tatiana Hullender, episode 3's writer Vanessa Baden-Kelly was asked what it means for John to be fearless and how he comes to represent this. She explained how John Sr.'s fear actually makes him one of the show's bravest characters, and from this, the younger John Stewart comes to understand how his emotions can actually help him become a Green Lantern. Check out Baden-Kelly's comments below:
When we're thinking about Green Lantern lore, we're not only thinking about being fearless, but about what the Lanterns say: feeling fear and having the willpower to overcome it. I think for John Sr., the fear of leaving his family and his wife and everything that they worked so hard for was not overcomeable. For anybody who loves their children and who loves the people around them, the very last thing they would ever do is leave them. So, in some ways, it's that very thing that makes John Sr. one of the bravest characters in our show. Obviously, the Stewarts [may be] the people who are able to raise the next great Green Lantern [due to] the fact that they do experience fear and know where to put up some boundaries and say, "No, I'm never going to do that because my family means more to me." For us, what we wanted to craft when we were crafting John Stewart is a Green Lantern who is deciding to do things a little bit different because he recognizes that the way the ring picks [people] - what it decides is fear, and what it decides isn't - is actually kind of bull crap. Having those emotions, having those things that guide you on what you should and shouldn't do, feeling humanity, and feeling emotions actually makes you more apt for the job than lacking them.
Baden-Kelly's explanation of the Stewart family's philosophy on fear, and John embracing the emotions of humanity, is not only part of his training, but is something he takes into his interview with Lianna, the Guardian played by Laura Linney. This includes him acknowledging that part of being human is loving the people that raise you, an attachment that is a foreign concept to Lianna and her experiences far from Earth.
John's honesty about these emotions does not prove to be a dealbreaker, though, as he is deemed worthy of becoming the next Green Lantern, and is even chosen with the intention of him replacing Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler). This secret further complicates his relationship with Hal, on top of episode 3's reveal about the Green Lantern's damaging impact on the Stewart family and Chandler's character being responsible for the younger John's dishonorable discharge from the Marines.
While the focus for now is on John's journey in Lanterns, his story will continue in the DC Universe next year, as he is confirmed to be in the Man of Tomorrow film. Between Superman (David Corenswet), Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Brainiac (Lars Eidinger), Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), Supergirl (Milly Alcock), Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), and plenty of others, John is only one piece of the story, but his experiences from Lanterns will inevitably influence him. Guy, who is also a Green Lantern, is confirmed to be in Lanterns season 1.
The ending of Lanterns season 1, episode 1 reveals that Hal has been killed in 2026. The series has primarily taken place in 2016 so far and still needs to answer how Hal met his demise, but the answers will likely be something that continues to impact John in Man of Tomorrow. Given how important John is poised to be to the future of the DCU, it is important that the time was taken to fully dig into his backstory and his unorthodox path to being chosen by the Guardians to become a Green Lantern.
