Provocative, controversial and gritty is how I would describe this film. There are several issues that I have to gripe about this psychological tale (inappropriate sexual behavior in workplaces, unethical behavior, just to name a few), but the biggest one starts with the protagonist, who by the way, is the doctor (as played by the brooding actor Joseph Plummer). Yipes! Right off the bat, the doctor starts to share his personal life with an assigned patient (as played by the quirky actor Michael Spitz)who clearly shows signs of some kind of mental distress. What kind of doctor does that? His fiancee (brilliantly played by the Black actress Sherrice Eaglin), somehow puts up with his behavior (which for the life of me I can't wrap my head around). But then this film starts to get into creepy behavior and we soon learn more than we really want to know about people's strange private lives. Definitely not your average Hollywood fare-I learned a lot about the world of therapy!-but the action kept me going and the eerie mystery surrounding the poor, demented patient was more than enough for my curiosity. Consider me cured. Hopefully.

I assumed that this movie was a horror tale, so I was initially disappointed. But I was wrong. This movie was about so much more. Based on the truth story of a Victorian man named Joseph Merrick who was born with a severe deformity that caused him to appear not normal but in the eyes of others, a hideous monster. The movie reveals that his encounter with a sympathetic doctor who tries to help his patient to try to live some kind of life. Heartbreaking movie about a man whose appearance was considered disgusting but whose heart revealed a warm and kind human being.

I was totally floored by this movie (which a good friend highly recommended). A seemingly simple story about a ghostwriter (be still my heart, Ewan McGregor) hired to write a memoir for a ex-British Prime Minister (as played by the suave and handsome Pierce Brosnan). But as this tale continues, it begins to weave a sinister web of intrigue involving dangerous people involved with the government with deadly consequences. If you like your thrills with a dash of murder and intrigue, then this movie will definitely send a sharp spike to the heart. The music score is hauntingly and will stay with you long after the credits have ended.
