The Expanse
10/10

Definitively the best modern sci-fi series. Its status as an ensemble piece allows for complex plots that succeed at showing the impact of interplanetary politics upon people of all walks of life. Also sometimes the cool rebels blow up an alien with a missile or something.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer

Full of Lanthimos’s formalism in the best way. A favorite target of people that pride themselves on not understanding modern film. Only a bit more tense than it was funny. Euripides would be proud.

Lost in Translation
8/10

Introduced boring heteros to the music of Peaches in 2003. A good example of a movie that can thrive entirely on vibes alone. Coppola’s choice to cast Bill Murray as a fading movie star that does Japanese commercials was inspired.

The first and best Pierce Brosnan Bond reinvigorated a franchise for the 1990s, calling out the character's past as a sexist dinosaur, and casting Dame Judi Dench as M. While this title is best remembered as a great shooter on the N64, the movie bears a rewatch.

Quantum of Solace
4/10

Kind of threw away the gravitas that Craig brought to the first of his Bond films. I guess the audience wasn’t feeling it. This is why we can’t have nice things.

Casino Royale

Actually felt like a fresh take on Bond at the time. Craig played a more emotionally vulnerable hero than the wink-and-nod Bonds of yesteryear. Less cartoonish than classic era Bond, but this might not be a good thing.

How did this get renewed so many times? Like many of its stars, it seems to want to promote progressive ideas while being ignorantly problematic. Only occasionally funny, usually gross.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
6/10

A classic that is vastly exceeded by most of its sequels. What was genre defining at the time might feel stale now, but it’s because the blend of horror comedy that Nightmare developed has been since perfected.

I agree that in some ways we knew this would end just as it had started, but Duggan wrote the two of them together as such a great pair that it stings.
