Starting in November 2026, Gems will transition to skills in Gemini Apps for personal Google Accounts, and in 2027, for work and school accounts. Check when Gems are going away.
Skills are reusable custom instructions that can help you automate tasks and save time in Gemini. The key benefits of skills are:
- Easy access: Use a skill by typing
/(soon to be@) followed by the skill's name directly in any Gemini chat. - Automatic use: Gemini automatically recognizes when a skill is relevant to your current prompt and applies it for you.
- Stackable: Combine multiple skills in a single chat to handle more complex tasks.
Skills are now available in Gemini chat to individuals over 18 signed in to a personal Google Account. We'll soon expand availability to work and school accounts. Learn more about skills.

About skills
What are skills and why should I use them?Skills are reusable instructions that customize how Gemini works for you. Instead of retyping prompts for recurring tasks, you can save them as a skill and quickly add them to any chat to save time. For example, you can use skills to:
- Consistently apply your unique writing style
- Generate specific meeting agendas
- Brainstorm with multiple perspectives
To create an effective skill, focus on these 3 best practices:
- Define when to use it: Describe specific situations when Gemini should use the skill automatically.
- Keep it concise: Focus your instructions only on the unique guidelines for the task.
- Provide examples: Include concrete examples of the output you expect.

You can create as many skills as you want, but only 100 can be active at a time. If you reach the limit, you can disable one to enable a new one. Learn how to disable and enable skills.
Yes, you can import skills you created on other platforms by uploading their SKILL.md files. Learn how to upload files to create a skill.
For now, the option to upload files to create skills is only available in the Gemini app on Mac and in the Gemini web app at gemini.google.com.
Skills work with some but not all features. You can use them with Connected Apps like Workspace apps, but they do not yet work with features like Canvas and Deep Research.
For now, most default tools that are available in Gems do not work with skills, including:
- Create video
- Create music
- Canvas
- Deep research
- Guided learning
Unlike Gems, skills don’t have a dedicated page that lists your recent chats with that skill. Because you can use skills in any chat, those chats are listed directly in the side panel.
About the transition from Gems to skills
When are Gems going away? We’re removing support for Gems at different times based on the type of account you sign in to the Gemini app with:
- November 2026: Personal Google accounts.
- March 2027: Workspace business, enterprise, and non-profit accounts.
- June 2027: Workspace education accounts.
As part of this change, Opal, our experiment for building mini apps, as well as Gems by Google Labs, will also go away at the same time in November. Learn more.
Yes, we’ll automatically transition your Gems to skills for you when Gems go away. If you prefer, you can also manually recreate your Gems as skills.
We’ll automatically transition your Gems, along with any supported files, to skills for you when Gems go away. If you want to manually transition knowledge files from a Gem to a skill before then, you’ll need to download the files individually to your device. You can then upload all files at the same time to a skill. For now, GitHub files aren’t supported in skills. Learn how to recreate your Gems as skills.
Later this year, we're transitioning from Gems to skills to give you an even better, more flexible way to customize Gemini. Skills will let you do more, like using them right in your current chat without having to switch tabs. You can also stack multiple skills together, to create even more customized workflows.
Yes. In the coming weeks, skills will have the features you loved in Gems, including the ability to share them with others and add files from Google Drive and notebooks from Gemini Notebook. You can already upload complex skills that include text files, PDFs, and images today.
