Preventing young suicide – and keeping hope alive.

About us

When they’re thinking about suicide or feeling unsafe, young people have to know how and where to find help – and everyone else needs to know what to do and say when it matters most. That’s why Papyrus exists. We’re a young person’s suicide prevention charity, which for us means much more than raising awareness. We run HopeLine 24/7, available all year round for anyone in need of urgent, confidential support. We shape confronting, and lifechanging, conversations about suicide. We teach people how to spot the signs and intervene. We partner with communities and businesses; we influence policy; we speak, and learn, and grow. And above all else, we’re here. We’re always here. That’s how we save lives.

When a young person discloses suicidal thoughts, the people around them, parents, teachers, friends and colleagues, often carry an enormous weight. They want to help. But they don't always know how. We've just launched a brand new resource to change that. If You're Worried About Someone is a practical guide for anyone concerned about a young person's safety. It covers how to recognise warning signs, how to ask directly about suicide safely, how to respond if someone says yes, and how to build a Safety Plan together. It's written for concerned others. But it's equally useful for professionals who support parents and families navigating these conversations. And if you or someone you're supporting needs to talk it through, HopeLine 24/7 is here for professionals too. 📞 Call: 0300 102 2470 📱 Text: Hope to 88247 📧 Email: pat@papyrus-uk.org Find our other resources here: https://lnkd.in/eKxAg79A

Papyrus has launched a new resource on PMDD and suicide, made possible thanks to funding from The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales. Around 824,000 people in the UK are living with PMDD. Of those, an estimated 593,000 will experience suicidal ideation. Despite this, the link between PMDD and suicide remains significantly under-discussed in clinical, educational and professional settings. The resource covers the science behind the condition, the relationship between hormonal cycles and suicidal ideation, treatment options, and practical guidance for supporting someone living with PMDD. It also includes a cycle tracker to help people identify and communicate their symptoms to healthcare professionals. If you work in healthcare, education, social care, or any role involving young people, we'd encourage you to download and share this resource with your networks. Download it here: https://lnkd.in/eAXv8_XM For specialist suicide prevention support, contact HopeLine 24/7 on 0300 102 2470.

  • 💭 WHAT NOT TO SAY TO SOMEONE WHO IS SUICIDAL When someone tells you they’re feeling suicidal, it can be overwhelming. You might panic. You might feel scared of saying the wrong thing. You might want to make the pain go away as quickly as possible. That’s a very human response. But sometimes, in trying to help, we can accidentally say things that make someone feel more alone. Even well-meaning words can land as dismissive if they don’t reflect how heavy things feel for them right now. We would encourage you to try to avoid: ❌ “Things will get better” ❌ “Others have it worse” ❌ “You’ve got so much to live for” ❌ “You just need to stay positive” ❌ “Everything happens for a reason” These phrases often come from a place of care, but they can minimise the person’s pain or make it feel like they’re not being fully heard. When someone is feeling suicidal, they don’t need perspective. They need connection. Instead, you could try: 💜 “I’m really glad you told me” 💜 “That sounds really hard” 💜 “I’m here to listen” 💜 “You don’t have to go through this on your own” 💜 “Do you want to tell me more about what’s been going on?” You don’t need the perfect words. You don’t need to fix everything. Being calm, present, and willing to listen can make a real difference, especially when someone feels like no one understands. Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can say is simply: “I’m here.” 💜 #LearnOnLinkedIn #SuicidePrevention

  • Every day, young people reach out to us, thinking about suicide. Every day, parents, teachers and professionals reach out, too. Worried, unsure what to say, needing guidance. We're here for all of them. Here for the young people who need to talk about suicide. Here for anyone worried about someone they love. Here for the hardest conversations, whenever they happen and whoever they involve. If you work with young people, or lead teams that do, we'd love to connect. Our training programmes equip people with the skills and confidence to have these conversations safely. We're Papyrus. And we're here for life.

  • Suicide is the leading cause of death for people under 35 in the UK. It's a fact that should stop all of us in our tracks. At Papyrus, we believe it's preventable. Everything we do is built on that belief. This week, we launched a new brand identity and a rebuilt website. Today, we're sharing our brand new 'Who We Are' resource. A clear, accessible overview of our work for anyone who wants to know more about what we do and how we can support the communities you work with. It covers HopeLine 24/7, our suicide prevention training programmes including SPARK, SPOT, SPEAK, ASIST and Seasons for Growth, our volunteering and fundraising opportunities, and how to get in touch. If you work in education, healthcare, policing or any sector that puts you close to young people, we'd love to connect. • Yesterday Papyrus launched a new brand identity, a rebuilt website, and a three-year strategy. Our Chief Executive, Ged Flynn, has written about what's driven that change and what it means for the organisations, schools, and communities we work with. It's worth five minutes of your time. Read Ged's message: https://lnkd.in/eMwJS4MC Suicide is still the biggest killer of young people in the UK. Yesterday, we became better equipped to change that than ever before. • Important update for anyone who signposts to HopeLine 24/7. Our HopeLine 24/7 contact number has changed. If your organisation, school, or team has our previous number (0800 068 4141) saved in resources, policies, or referral pathways, please update it. The new number is 0300 102 2470. Everything else remains the same. The same trained advisers, the same confidential support, the same around-the-clock availability. Text, email and webchat are unchanged too. The new number also saves Papyrus thousands of pounds every year, money that goes directly back into our training, our helpline, and our work with young people. 📱 Text: Hope to 88247 📧 Email: pat@papyrus-uk.org 💬 Webchat: papyrus-uk.org If you'd like updated Papyrus signposting materials for your organisation, visit papyrus-uk.org or get in touch with our team directly. We're still here for every young person who needs us.

  • Today, we’re launching a new brand identity and website for Papyrus Prevention of Young Suicide. Suicide is still the biggest killer of people under 35 in the UK. That’s not a statistic we’re willing to accept. For nearly 30 years, Papyrus has been providing support through HopeLine 24/7, delivering accredited suicide prevention training, and working to change the conversation around young suicide. Our new brand – ‘Here for Life’ – was developed over two years in partnership with Kind, shaped directly by the young people we exist to help. What does this mean for the organisations we work with? Our training programmes – SPOT, SPARK and SPEAK continue with the same dedicated team and carry the same accreditations. We still deliver ASIST and Seasons for Growth training. Our new website makes it easier than ever to find the right training for your team. https://lnkd.in/eijDyCam Papyrus – Here for Life
