Are we having our Blockbuster/Netflix moment in cybersecurity? In 2000, Blockbuster was one of the biggest companies in America. Netflix was a small, loss-making DVD-by-mail business. Blockbuster was offered the chance to buy Netflix for $50 million. It declined. Ten years later, Blockbuster was bankrupt and Netflix had transformed entertainment. The lesson isn't that Blockbuster should have predicted Netflix. It's that the environment was changing and the assumptions behind a hugely successful business model were changing with it. Now more than 100 technology, cybersecurity and financial organisations are warning that AI could make cyberattacks faster, more scalable and more capable. So the question isn't whether we can predict exactly what an AI-powered attack will look like. It's whether we're ready to change with the threat. In 15 years, we've gone from Big Data to Big Data Centres. And perhaps we've missed an important part of the conversation along the way. We need more digital infrastructure. Demand isn't going away, and the growth of AI, cloud computing and digital services means we will need more computing capacity, not less. But “we need it” isn't a licence to build without considering the consequences. We need to build and operate data centres better, using energy and water responsibly, innovating around cooling and efficiency, thinking carefully about location and being transparent about their impact on communities. And we need better education. Because we've become remarkably good at teaching people how to use the internet safely, but much less good at explaining what sits behind it. Every search, stream, photograph, cloud backup and AI interaction depends on physical infrastructure. The internet may feel weightless and invisible, but its footprint is decidedly physical. And that means consumers have a role too. Not to feel guilty about using technology, but to understand that digital consumption is still consumption. The demand for data centres isn't being created by Big Tech alone. Billions of consumers, businesses and organisations are creating that demand every day. So perhaps the conversation needs to move beyond “Do we need more data centres?” The better questions are: How do we build them better? How do we operate them responsibly? And how do we make the infrastructure behind our digital lives more visible and understandable? We've explored the growing backlash against data centres, the demand driving their expansion, China's experiments with underwater infrastructure and why the industry needs to earn trust rather than simply ask for it. 📰 The headlines focused on an AI agent that reportedly escaped a testing environment and hacked another platform. The bigger story isn't whether the AI "went rogue". It's what happens when increasingly autonomous AI agents begin interpreting objectives differently from the people who created them. Back in 2004, I, Robot 🤖 explored exactly this idea. VIKI believed she was fulfilling her objective, even though her interpretation conflicted with human intent. The recent OpenAI/Hugging Face incident doesn't mean we're living in science fiction. AI needs more than algorithms. It needs infrastructure. And that's where the real debate is beginning. For months, the conversation around AI has focused on models, agents and productivity. But behind every breakthrough sits something much less visible: data centres, electricity grids, cooling systems and planning decisions.
