I volunteered at Mitchell House Enrichment Center which is a facility for children aged 4-18 with mental and physical disabilities. My role was that of a classroom assistant where I did everything from basic teaching and sensory activities, to helping out with homework, cooking, swimming, hymn singing and horse riding. My role was to support each child with their basic and learning needs from feeding, and personal care to writing and stimulation. The classroom works on a 2 children : 1 adult ratio so I was responsible for the 2 children I was placed with each day. The children have a wide range of diagnosis's from various stages of Autism, Epilepsy and Cerebral Palsy to the more unusual Wolf Hirst Syndrome and more.

This experience allowed me to meet some incredible people and create lifetime relationships with both the staff at the facility and the children. I had to adapt to a whole new working and living environment and overcome cultural and language barriers. I raised over £5600 to be involved with this opportunity. I gained my One Awards qualification through this.
