Ella Pretorius ACMA CGMA reposted thisBack in the 90s, games taught patience. You lost → you learned → you tried again. No notifications. No rewards every 30 seconds. No “don’t miss out” pressure. Just focus. Today’s games are engineered differently. 🎯 Daily streaks 🎯 Infinite upgrades 🎯 FOMO mechanics Kids aren’t playing for joy anymore. They’re playing to stay hooked. When everything fights for your attention, focus becomes a rare skill, not a default one. This isn’t nostalgia. It’s a design shift. Ella Pretorius ACMA CGMA reposted thisElla Pretorius ACMA CGMA reposted thisI've been paying a team to kill my company. The idea came from one of my favourite books.... Clayton Christensen's The Innovator's Dilemma - the book Steve Jobs called his favourite business book and from my research on Thomas Watson, the founder of IBM! Here's the key idea 💡 The death of a company isn't usually caused by bad management. It's caused by good management doing exactly what they're supposed to do - optimising the current business, listening to current customers, protecting current margins. Which is why disruption almost always comes from outside the business. So we built our own "outside" and we call the team "FlightX". They have their own roles in the company, and come together to form a second team. They sit within our company FLIGHTSTORY which is part of Steven.com They have one job: make everything we've built obsolete before someone else does - find ways to kill our current business. Their own budget. Their own approval process. Reporting directly to me. 🏴☠️ Right now they're building AI-driven podcasts that could replace The Diary of a CEO entirely (pray for me) via FLIGHTSTORY 🏴☠️ They worked on digital screen technology that could replace our need for physical production sets. 🏴☠️ They're also working on a better podcast advertising system that could kill how podcast adverts currently work. I think every fast growing company, in a rapidly changing world, should follow suit - there is some naive kid, in their bedroom, messing around on their computer, who is going to disrupt your business 1, 5 or 10 years from now. CREATE A TEAM THAT CAN ACT LIKE A KID MESSING AROUND IN THEIR BEDROOM. Thomas Watson, founder of IBM knew this. 🦆 So he created a team called "Wild Ducks" - a small group of 8 innovators who reported directly to the CEO and were given complete freedom to break rules, pursue breakthrough ideas, and bypass standard procedures. The concept, inspired by philosopher Søren Kierkegaard, was based on the idea that "you can make wild goose tame, but you can never make tame goose wild again" - recognising that creative people lose their ability to innovate once constrained by corporate bureaucracy! The system worked brilliantly for 50 years at IBM! I think most companies die because they're threatened by innovation, so they bury their heads in the sand, dismiss it and pretend it's not happening. But they always see it coming... Kodak invented the digital camera. Blockbuster had the chance to buy Netflix for $50 million. Nokia saw the iPhone coming. They all had the information. What they didn't have was permission to kill their own business whilst it was still working. That's the real lesson of The Innovator's Dilemma. The forces that make you successful are often the same ones that make you vulnerable. Thanks for reading, and please do share your thoughts or questions below! Shoutout: Isaac Martin, Grace Miller, Matt Toland, Marcus Poole & Vu Nong

Ella Pretorius ACMA CGMA reposted thisElla Pretorius ACMA CGMA reposted thisDopamine expert and Stanford psychiatrist Doctor Anna Lembke explained something to me about motivation that rewired my brain... Motivation is not fuel. It's the bi-product of momentum. Your brain is a prediction machine. Before you start, it overestimates the pain and underestimates the reward. Every unmade decision looks harder than it is. But the moment you begin - write one sentence, do one pushup, make one call - everything changes. That single action triggers dopamine. Not much, but enough. And dopamine isn't the molecule of pleasure; it's the molecule of more. It whispers: "That wasn't so bad. Do it again." This creates a simple formula: Tiny action → Small dopamine hit → Slightly easier next action → More dopamine → Momentum The key I've found is to make the first action so small that your brain can't object. Then let chemistry do the work. Did you see my conversation with Doctor Anna Lembke on The Diary Of A CEO? It's one of my favourite conversations of all time!

Ella Pretorius ACMA CGMA liked thisElla Pretorius ACMA CGMA liked thisThere’s something about seeing Hogwarts in real life that hits differently. Not because it’s just a set… But because of everything it represents. A story that started as an idea. Built piece by piece. Turned into something people can walk through, experience, and believe in. It made me think about the kind of work I’m drawn to. Not just building things that exist… But building things that people can actually step into and feel. The kind of work where: Ideas turn into systems Systems turn into experiences And experiences turn into real impact That’s the magic.

Ella Pretorius ACMA CGMA liked thisElla Pretorius ACMA CGMA liked thisPromoting a toxic manager is a huge mistake. (It starts with ignoring bad behavior.) Toxic managers can ruin your team & culture long before you see the damage in numbers. Leaders, do this instead: Address toxic behavior, no matter the performance. Protect your best people and your culture. This approach will keep your team strong, and ensure long-term success. Don't let short-term gains blind you. Your company’s future depends on it. ♻ Repost if this resonates. Thank you! P.S. Have you ever seen a toxic person get promoted just because they "made their numbers"?

Ella Pretorius ACMA CGMA liked thisElla Pretorius ACMA CGMA liked thisI started at Karbon in January understanding, what I now know, was a very small part of the world of Accounting. Three months in, I've learned a TON and here are a couple things that have genuinely surprised me: ✨ Busy season is a cultural phenomenon, not just a calendar event. Tax season doesn't just mean long hours- it reshapes how entire firms hire, plan, communicate, and recover. For a lot of accountants, the year is basically split in two: busy season, and everything else. I had no idea how much of firm life is built around surviving it. ✨ Accounting is a people business first. The stereotype is someone heads-down in spreadsheets. The reality? The best accountants I've come across are deeply relationship-driven. Clients don't just want accurate numbers- they want someone they trust completely with their financial life. Retention, referrals, reputation- it all runs on relationships. ✨ Small firms do incredibly heavy lifting. A 5-person accounting firm might be managing the finances of businesses worth tens of millions of dollars. The complexity they handle with lean teams is genuinely impressive and largely invisible to the outside world. ✨ Accountants don't get nearly enough credit. They're often the last line of defense for a business's financial health- they are catching mistakes, flagging risks, keeping things compliant. But they rarely get recognized for it. If your accountant is good, you probably don't even notice, because nothing goes wrong. Joining Karbon has given me a front-row seat to an industry that's harder, more human, and more important than most people realize. Grateful for the perspective. Especially during this year's busy season. If you take one thing away from this- go thank your accountant!

Ella Pretorius ACMA CGMA liked thisElla Pretorius ACMA CGMA liked thisI told my girl I wanted to quit my job... & I know what you're thinking: "What would you do for money?" & believe me, I thought the same thing. We had a baby on the way, and it was probably the wrong time to go all in on a business idea. But I was working 10-day shifts in the oil fields. 7 hours from home. Missing everything. & the moment I held my daughter for the first time, I knew I couldn't go back. So I called my boss, left my boots behind, and went all in on an ATM business I'd seen on YouTube. No sales experience. No connections. Just an idea and a reason. That was January 2020. Today, I have 50 ATMs generating $17,000/month in passive income. My girl hasn't worked a day since. My kids will never worry about money. & I only work about 5 hours per week. The "wrong time" turned out to be exactly the right time. Because when you have something real to fight for, you figure it out. If you've been sitting on an idea but waiting for the "right" moment... This is your sign. DM me "ATM" and I'll show you exactly how to get started.

Ella Pretorius ACMA CGMA liked thisElla Pretorius ACMA CGMA liked thisStop making yourself smaller so other people can feel big. Some people are only comfortable with you when you take up less space. Less ambition. Less truth. Less presence. Less range. Not because you are too much. Because your full capacity unsettles people who have made peace with staying small. That is the trap. Most people do not lose themselves all at once. They lose themselves by editing one truth, one opinion, one instinct at a time until being accepted matters more than being fully themselves. Brilliant people spend years becoming easier to handle. They speak less directly. Lower their standards. Hide their ambition. Make their thinking more digestible. Not because they are wrong. Because being fully themselves makes other people uncomfortable. Let's call it what it is. People are not asking you to be easier. They are asking you to be smaller. Smaller in your honesty. Smaller in your ambition. Smaller in your standards. Smaller in your presence. That is not humility. That is self-reduction. And playing small has a cost. It lowers what people expect from you. It attracts environments that only work if you remain contained. It quietly trains you to abandon parts of who you really are. But in leadership, it does not stop with you. People do not only hear what you say. They read what you permit. They absorb what you model. A leader who reduces herself to fit the room creates caution in others too. People start editing themselves. Softening their ideas. Hiding their instincts. Performing what feels acceptable instead of saying what is true. But a leader who stays fully herself gives other people permission to stop pretending too. That is one of the great paradoxes of leadership: The more permission you give yourself to be real, The more room other people have to be real too. Being an ocean is not about drowning the room. It is about not pretending to be shallow. Real maturity is keeping your depth and developing the judgement to use it well. Read the room, yes. But do not betray yourself to keep the room comfortable. Not everyone will know what to do with your full presence. That is not a sign to shrink. That is a sign of mismatch. The right people will not ask you to reduce yourself to be accepted. They will meet you with courage. With substance. With range. Do not drain yourself to make other people feel tall. Stay whole. That is where your best work is. That is where your real people are. That is where your leadership starts to breathe. ♻️ Repost if you are done making yourself smaller to protect other people's comfort. ➕ Follow Florence Divet ☀️ for leadership people want to follow. 📩 To keep growing as a leader, join: https://lnkd.in/e4zwNANS Visual credit: @derricchew on IG

Ella Pretorius ACMA CGMA liked thisElla Pretorius ACMA CGMA liked thisMost accountancy firms aren’t being disrupted by new services. They’re being disrupted by a new operating model. For years, the model has looked like this: Accounts - after year-end Tax - planned annually (or reactively) Advisory - ad hoc conversations Corporate finance - only when a deal is happening All delivered at different times, by different people, using different data. That model is starting to break, because the clients we work with (founder-led, scaling, PE-backed businesses) don’t operate like that anymore. They need: - Real-time visibility - Joined-up thinking - Ongoing support through growth, funding, and exit The shift is simple, but significant. From fragmented, once-a-year planning to continuous, connected decision-making. In practice, this means sitting down regularly and actively running the business with clients; reviewing performance, updating forecasts, stress-testing decisions, optimising tax in real time, and preparing for funding or exit... long before it happens. This isn’t about doing more work. It’s about working differently: - One set of numbers - One joined-up conversation - One consistent rhythm The future isn’t more services, it’s a better system for helping clients make decisions.

The classroom works on a 2 children : 1 adult ratio so I was responsible for the 2 children I was placed with each day. The children have a wide range of diagnosis's from various stages of Autism, Epilepsy and Cerebral Palsy to the more unusual Wolf Hirst Syndrome and more.
This experience allowed me to meet some incredible people and create lifetime relationships with both the staff at the facility and the children. I had to adapt to a whole new working and living environment and overcome cultural and language barriers. I raised over £5600 to be involved with this opportunity. I gained my One Awards qualification through this.

Ever messed up a bunch of transactions on Xero?! Well we've got a trade secret and its my favourite feature in Xero 🤫 if you've ever coded a batch of transactions to the wrong category, applied the wrong VAT rate, or selected the wrong contact, don’t worry because Xero’s Find & Recode feature is here to save the day. As Xero advisors, we have access to this powerful tool that lets us search for and recode transactions in bulk. Whether it's fixing account codes, VAT treatments, or assigning the right customer or supplier, this feature helps clean up records in minutes, not hours. 💡 Bonus for Tracking Categories: If you're using tracking categories (or planning to start), Find & Recode also lets you go back and apply tracking to past transactions, improving your reporting and comparability over time. ⚠️ A Word of Caution: Recoding is permanent and cannot be undone, but you can recode your transactions again. To protect your historical data, make sure accounting periods are locked down if you don’t want older transactions touched. If you'd like some help with your Xero and want a Xero Geek's help, get in touch 👇

One of the shortcuts I like in Xero is being able to copy a previous transaction. The screenshot is of how you copy an invoice to a new invoice by clicking on the three dots. But you can also copy a previous journal which saves a bit of effort and thought when posting a new journal. Or copy a spend or receive money transaction in the bank which saves needing to fill in the contact and coding etc. There's a line somewhere between lazy and efficient and I think this falls on the efficient side of that line.

I’ve got the cheat code… And im sharing it with you for free… (I wonder how many people have absolutely NO idea what any of this means 🤣🤣) It still amazes me that there is so much discourse amongst accountants about what ‘advisory’ really is I found myself mulling this over the weekend (because I’m THAT cool) and I think it pretty much comes down to this COMPLIANCE - does what it says on the tin, it keeps you compliant And at risk of creating further discourse, I think you can make a valid argument that it provides limited value Not in the sense that it isn’t important and essential and required - but you can be a 4 year qualified accountant and a 30 year qualified accountant and provide similar value in compliance work It requires skill and training and knowledge, but it is largely historical and I would say, a box ticking exercise ADVISORY - is where we start looking at how we USE our compliance data to INFORM our future If we are always looking at how we did yesterday, we are never truly planning for tomorrow This is how businesses get caught out by pricing traps, variance issues, scope creep, economic uncertainty, changes in regulation It becomes an exercise of ‘we did’ rather than ‘we will’ This is where the 30 year accountant will have the edge, as they can leverage experience, leadership, people skills, economic knowledge, networking relationships to take yesterdays data and turn it into a better tomorrow We can very easily look back and compare 5 years accounts and recognise trends and patterns But if we don’t do a similar look forward - that data is only doing what it is meant to do KEEP YOU COMPLIANT Nobody wakes up one morning and goes “I have paid my mortgage for 7 years, I will just keep doing that and my house will get bigger” You plan, you research, you budget, you change So that when you need and/or want to, you’re in a position to take things to another level So there’s the cheat code Stop looking in the rear view mirror at where you’ve been Start looking forward and thinking about where you want to be Use it wisely - do it right, maybe you’ll get an infinite money glitch or something 😜 #failtoplanplantofail

The latest UK Budget was announced yesterday, and for those of us in the accounting profession, it marks another period where we’ll be supporting clients as they navigate these upcoming changes. Looking at the changes overall, this Budget reinforces just how essential proactive financial planning for companies’ can be, particularly around cash flow, forecasting, and long-term strategy. Here are a few key points that stood out for our clients: • National Minimum Wage increases: – 21+ increasing from £12.21 to £12.71 • State Pension changes: – Rising by 4.8% from April 2026 – Those still working whilst receiving their pension may see higher income tax • Tax thresholds: – Personal allowances frozen until 2030/31 (standard code remains 1257L) • Salary sacrifice pensions: – Contributions over £2,000 will attract National Insurance from April 2029 • Income tax increase for property sales and dividends: – A 2% increase on income from property, savings, and dividends. Could this impact landlords and the rent they charge? There’s a lot for individuals and businesses to take in, and the impact will vary depending on their own circumstances. Over the upcoming weeks, we’ll be reviewing the details with clients to make sure they understand any areas that affect them and how we can plan to support them.

MTD ITSA: Xero pricing update 🧮 With the MTD Income Tax regime coming into force, more and more individuals each year will fall within the thresholds of needing to report their self assessment taxes quarterly rather than annually. This will mean that many small business owners and landlords will need to adopt an MTD compliant software to allow them to complete the filings. With this in mind, Xero have recently launched a new subscription tier called "Simple" - a discounted package aimed at sole traders and landlords to allow them to comply with the new regime. The price for this package is £7 per month, and is fully MTD compliant "out of the box". If you require support in taking your first steps into cloud accounting (for MTD reasons or otherwise!), our team at Henderson Loggie would be happy to assist.

There’s loads of buzz around our app for schools, but some of you may be wondering… what does XfE actually do? 🤝 Xero Integration - our tightly knitted integration with Xero transfers data between both systems seamlessly. 📊 Budget holder reporting - these permissions driven dashboards allow staff to quickly view the financial positions of their departments (and no one else's!) using data from Xero. 📨 DfE Integration - for schools to submit their #AnnualAccountsReturn digitally. We had the second most submissions of any school finance software last year! 💸 VAT126 reporting - allowing schools to produce their VAT claims in just a few clicks. 🏦 Budgeting App Integrations - used to upload actuals to your budgeting system, to make your forecasting decisions that much easier. Think of it as a toolkit for the education sector to supercharge Xero's already huge list of benefits. And it works! Here’s another fantastic review from Victoria Academies Trust on the #XeroAppStore who use XfE alongside ApprovalMax and Xero - thank you for the kind feedback Joe! #XfE #SchoolFinance #Xero

SAVING TIME WITH SIMPLICITY In my first 3 months at XfE, I’ve seen just how much of a difference we’re making for schools by helping them move to Xero. By replacing manual processes with a simple, cloud-based system, schools are: 👀 Gaining clearer visibility over their budgets ⏱️ Spending less time on day-to-day bookkeeping 🤯 Reducing the stress around reporting and compliance What’s also stood out is how easily Xero integrates with other tools like budgeting, purchasing, reporting apps and even our own in house app so everything works together seamlessly. It’s been great to see schools save time and refocus their energy where it really counts. #XFE #Xero #SchoolFinance #Education #EfficiencyInSchools #AppIntegration

Ever wondered how to add a fixed asset into Xero WITHOUT relying on automation? You're not alone — and in 2025, with so many businesses tightening up their processes, understanding how to manually manage fixed assets is a skill that can really set you apart as a bookkeeper. Whether you're working with a client who’s just bought a new van, or helping a small business owner track their office equipment, knowing how to manually add a fixed asset into the Fixed Asset Register in Xero is a MUST. It’s not just about entering numbers — it’s about understanding the asset’s useful life, choosing the right depreciation method, and making sure it’s all reflected correctly in the reports. This is especially important when: - The asset wasn’t purchased through Xero - You’re catching up on historical data - Or the client prefers manual control over automation If you're still building confidence with Xero, this is a great area to focus on. It shows attention to detail and gives you a better grasp of how assets impact the balance sheet over time. We’ve just covered this step-by-step in our latest YouTube video — perfect if you want to follow along and practise as you go. #BookkeepingConfidence

Already using tools like Dext and Xero? That’s a great start but most people miss out on one of the biggest time-savers: rules. When you set up rules properly, your software automatically recognises regular transactions and knows exactly where to put them. Think: • Accountancy fees → accountancy with 20% VAT • McDonald’s on your debit card → straight to subsistence Less manual entry, fewer mistakes, and much more time saved. It’s one of those little tweaks that makes a huge difference in day-to-day bookkeeping. Do you use rules in your software or are you still posting everything by hand? 🫣

Todays good news from Xero is that they are looking to improve user permissions in respect of authorising employee timesheets. 🙂 Xero timesheets is a great feature which allows employees to record their hours using the Xero Me app which is fed directly into the payroll software itself. This can save so much time, as there is no need to re-type the data from a spreadsheet or a handwritten form into the payroll, and reduces the potential for error. However, currently it is only payroll admins that can approve an employee timesheet in Xero. Which is great for smaller businesses, but where a company has managed teams, then timesheets may need to be approved outside of the payroll software before submitting to the payroll by the payroll admins. Streamlining accounting and payroll processes is improving day on day. Software providers, such as Xero, are always looking at improving their software and saving time for their users. Software has come on in leaps and bounds over the years, but there is always room for improvement. If you want to know more about Xero timesheets, or have a digital conundrum which needs a resolve, then please do not hesitate to reach out to me. #digital #advisory JS (Jackson Stephen) #accounting #payroll #software Xero 📞 telephone 01942 292542
