How UTM conversion lift study in TTD can show programmatic incrementality (and how you can use it to calculate iCPA/iROAS) Programmatic is usually the first channel to cut. But that’s not always the right move - it actually drives value. The problem is, many of those conversions get attributed to other channels. So what is a cross-channel conversion lift study? It’s a study that helps you understand how your programmatic efforts impact the performance of other channels. It doesn’t show your real incremental conversions, but it definitely helps explain why your client doesn’t see programmatic conversions in GA4 - they’re simply attributed elsewhere. There are limitations though. It’s not ID-free - you need some kind of identifier to match impression and conversion data across devices. And it doesn’t show the full picture, it’s more directional. How this usually works: You implement pixels that capture traffic for each channel using UTM parameters - direct, organic, paid search, paid social, email, etc. Then you contact your DSP rep (or use a built-in feature) to set up the study. The test will capture users exposed to your ads, match them with conversion data, and show the source/medium that drove the conversion. The output typically includes a few key tables: total population, converters, and format (Video, CTV, Display, or any mix of campaigns). What you see afterwards is each channel and channel mix (Video, Display, CTV, Video+Display+CTV, etc.) combined with UTM sources (direct, paid search, etc.), showing the number of conversions with and without programmatic exposure. That difference gives you a sense of where programmatic actually contributes. Using raw data from this report, I built (using chatGPT, of course) a deterministic model/tool that calculates iROAS and iCPA. For incremental conversions, it only counts low-to-moderate increases in baseline CVR - because that’s where real lift comes from. When baseline CVR is already high (for example, email + programmatic retargeting), it assumes those users would’ve converted anyway. With this data, you can get iCPA/iROAS by channel and for programmatic overall, showing how your campaigns impact total incremental performance. It’s not the most advanced or precise way to prove incrementality, but it’s one of the fastest and most accessible. And it helps you explain what really happens when clients think “programmatic doesn’t drive conversions.” It does - you just have to know where to look.

Today is feeling a bit like PMax Christmas 🎁✨ Google has announced some huge updates to Performance Max campaigns, including channel performance reporting, detailed asset reporting, and improved search term visibility that aligns more closely with Search and Shopping. To date, fantastic scripts by some legends (shout out Mike Rhodes 💡) have given us the tools to unpack these aspects already by helping us get under the hood of our campaigns. It's not entirely new capabilities, but it is great to see Google listening & implementing some key UI changes that advertisers have been asking for since launching PMax in 2022. These updates make reporting more accessible to those not using scripts already, but with any new Google feature, it's super important to explore them hands-on. Understanding what the data actually shows, how to apply it strategically, and where gaps may still exist is key. Ultimately, if you know what your PMax campaign is meant to achieve, these updates bring you even closer to unlocking actionable insights with greater transparency. What would happen if everyone lumped their budget into PPC? Let’s assume most performance teams optimise primarily through a last-click lens. High-intent channels win. Short-term efficiency dominates. ROAS becomes the primary decision signal. Naturally, capital would drift toward PPC. Because search converts well. It looks efficient. It’s easy to defend in a spreadsheet. Lets look at how this plays out in the real world... Phase 1: Short-Term Efficiency Improves ROAS rises. CPA falls. Conversion rates look strong. Why? Because you’re concentrating capital where intent already exists. You haven’t grown demand. You’ve intensified capture. Phase 2: Competitive Inflation Now extend the timeline. If many teams overweight search: Auction pressure increases. CPC inflation rises. Marginal CPA creeps upward. Search volume is finite. Advertiser competition is not. Efficiency compresses gradually. Phase 3: Demand Thins Out Meanwhile, prospecting and upper-funnel creation have been squeezed. Fewer new users enter the category. Retargeting pools shrink. Brand search momentum plateaus. Eventually harvest performance weakens. Not because PPC “stopped working.” Because new demand wasn’t replenished. Search captures demand. It does not create it. The Structural Advantage Now consider the operator who: • Deliberately separates creation and harvest capital • Protects prospecting investment • Accepts lower short-term efficiency in exchange for pipeline health When demand surfaces, they’re already positioned. Healthier retargeting pools. Stronger brand momentum. Less reactive bidding. They don’t chase demand. They meet it as it forms. Capital allocation isn’t just about optimisation. It’s about structural balance. If everyone harvests, the disciplined creator gains asymmetric advantage.

Meta’s attribution window isn't just a reporting setting - it's an algorithm training decision. Most advertisers frame this as a measurement choice. But the purchases within your window are what Meta uses to find more buyers, so you're choosing what the algorithm learns from. There's no universally right answer for what is the best window, but here’s how I normally think about some tradeoffs of each: 7-Day Click ✅ More conversion data for faster learning and more stable optimizations. ✅ Better for products with longer consideration windows where a higher % of purchases happen after day 1. ✅ Gives the algorithm room to find higher-value customers who research before buying. ⚠️ If audiences aren’t properly excluded, it can pick up conversions from people who were already going to buy, especially on brands with high returning customer rates, leading to higher frequency and degraded TOF delivery. ⚠️ Platform revenue can look inflated vs backend, making it harder to make media mix decisions. ⚠️ For brands already doing significant revenue, wider windows are can potentially capture existing demand vs incremental. 1-Day Click ✅ Forces the algorithm to optimize around same-day purchases, keeping delivery focused on true prospecting ✅ Keeps frequency lower and net new reach healthier since Meta can't "win" by re-serving to people who are in a longer buying cycle. ✅ Can be better for B ⚠️ Less conversion data can lead to a longer learning phase, especially at lower spend levels. ⚠️ Could be training the algorithm to ignore your highest-intent buyers simply because they didn't convert in the first 24 hours. ⚠️ Not representative of actual buying behavior for longer consideration products. A few things that are true regardless of window: Conversions happening outside your attribution window will still show up in your blended metrics and contribute to MER. You're just choosing whether Meta trains on them or not. Frequency is a great indicator of whether your window is working. Low L7D frequency with strong spend means delivery is staying top of funnel. High frequency, and low net new reach, means you're hitting the same people over and over again which you want to avoid. And clean up view-through settings regardless. Going from 7DC/1DV/1DEV → 7DC only is almost always a good first step. There's no sweeping best answer. But understanding what your attribution window is teaching the algorithm is the first step to choosing the right one.

JICMAIL's Response Rate Tracker 2025 is out. Now including response rate, ROI, CPA and AOV data from 3,800 campaigns measured by fifteen industry organisations, this year's release highlights the increasingly important role that the mail channel plays in acquiring new customers. Cold DM response rates grew 24% year on year in 2024, while Door Drop ROI grew 41%. With more data, it's the new planning variables which have got me the most excited however. There are some really interesting learnings emerging around repeat sends and message reinforcement: Repeat Cold DM mail sends achieve 37% higher ROI and 2.5 times higher response rates than new campaigns, along with greater Average Order Values and lower CPAs.
