Noah Shachtman

Noah Shachtman is a contributing editor at WIRED and a contributing writer at Rolling Stone. A “hard-charging editor with a knack for scrutinizing the rich and powerful,” according to CNN, Shachtman most recently served as editor-in-chief of Rolling Stone. Over two-and-a-half years, he led the storied outlet to a Polk Award, a National Magazine Award, an Overseas Press Club Award, and its first-ever Emmy nomination.

Before that, he was the editor-in-chief of The Daily Beast. During his tenure, the site became “a journalistic scoop factory,” in the words of the Poynter Institute, landing exclusive after culture-shaking exclusive in politics, entertainment, media, and international affairs. Shachtman has also served as an executive editor at Foreign Policy magazine and as a contributing editor at WIRED, where he co-founded and edited its national security blog, Danger Room. The site took home the Online Journalism Award for best beat reporting and a National Magazine Award for reporting in digital media.

A former non-resident fellow at the Brookings Institution, Shachtman has reported from Afghanistan, Israel, Iraq, Russia, and elsewhere around the globe. He’s written for the New York Times Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, among others. He has spoken before audiences at West Point, the Army Command and General Staff College, the Aspen Security Forum, Harvard Law School, Yale Law School, and National Defense University. And he’s made appearances on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, PBS, ABC News, NPR, and other broadcast outlets.

Before turning to journalism, Shachtman worked as a book editor and campaign staffer on Bill Clinton’s first presidential campaign, and a professional bass player. A graduate of Georgetown University and a former student at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Shachtman lives in Brooklyn with his wife and their two sons.
