Kelso Chinese Cemetery

Local folklore long held that the site was a burial ground for Chinese railroad laborers. However, according to the National Park Service, records show this is likely a misattribution; the site got its name because people once mistakenly believed it held the remains of a Chinese train worker. In the 1940s, local newspaper columnist Earl Buie wrote that the white crosses at the site actually marked the graves of victims of the devastating 1918 flu epidemic. Today, no readable names or dates remain on any markers, and the National Park Service notes it remains inconclusive whether any human remains are still present at the site, as some may have been washed away by flash floods over the decades.

Kelso is a ghost town and defunct railroad depot in the Mojave National Preserve in San Bernardino County, California, USA. It was named after railroad worker John H. Kelso, whose name was placed into a hat along with two other workers to decide the name of the town. At Kelso stands a beautiful Spanish-style Union Pacific Depot built about 1906, surrounded by shade trees, a welcome rarity in the hot, barren desert.

The Grand Theatre opened in 1920, and was the largest theatre in Alton at the time, seating around 1,400. In 1954, CinemaScope was installed at the Grand Theatre. The last movies shown at the Grand Theatre were a double-feature of “Heavy Traffic” and “The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat” in 1977. Afterwards, the theatre was “temporarily” closed, but that became permanent. The Grand Theatre is the only classic movie house in Alton remaining mostly intact whereas the others which are still standing today have been repurposed for other uses and no longer resemble their former selves. There are plans to renovate it as a performing arts venue.

Ch’ëdähdëk / Forty Mile

Forty Mile (Hän: Ch’ëdähdëk) is the oldest town in Canada's Yukon. It was established in 1886 at the confluence of the Yukon and Fortymile rivers by prospectors and fortune hunters in search of gold. Largely abandoned during the Klondike Gold Rush, the town site continued to be used by Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in. It's currently a historic site co-owned and co-managed by Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in and the Government of Yukon. Ch’ëdähdëk (Forty Mile) became part of the Tr’ondëk-Klondike UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023, recording the transformation of the landscape and the Indigenous adaptation to European colonization.

This is a defunct mental health facility in Otwock, Poland, built at the beginning of the 1900s. In the 2nd Polish Republic, the sanatorium complex was expanded with more buildings and staff. Zofiówka initially had 95 beds, but this number had increased to 275 by 1935. The Jewish history of Zofiówka came to its end in the course of the Holocaust following the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany.

During the war, the estate was sold to John Stewart, a produce merchant, who occupied the new castle with his family and farmed the estate. The castle was eventually abandoned, as it was too large and expensive to maintain. The lead roof was removed in 1967 so the owners could declare it as uninhabitable and avoid paying rates. The interiors were in good condition in the late 1960s, but photographs published in early 2017 confirmed that the interiors were in total ruin.

St Kilda is a remote archipelago situated 35 nautical miles west-northwest of North Uist in the North Atlantic Ocean. It contains the westernmost islands of the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Numerous factors led to the evacuation of St Kilda. The islands' inhabitants had existed for centuries in relative isolation until tourism and the presence of the military during the First World War led the islanders to seek alternatives to privations they routinely suffered. After the end of the Great War, most of the young men left the island, and the population fell from 73 in 1920 to 37 in 1928. After the death of four men from influenza in 1926, there was a succession of crop failures in the 1920s. Investigations by the University of Aberdeen into the soil where crops had been grown have shown that there had been contamination by lead and other pollutants, caused by the use of seabird carcasses and peat ash in the manure used on the fields. This occurred over a lengthy period of time, as manuring practices became more intensive, and may have been a factor in the evacuation. On 29 August 1930, the ship HMS Harebell took the remaining 36 inhabitants to Morvern on the Scottish mainland, a decision they took collectively themselves.

Six Flags New Orleans operated its final day of rides on August 21, 2005, just over a week before Hurricane Katrina struck Southeast Louisiana on August 29. Because the park sat in a low-lying basin, the storm's massive surge overwhelmed its drainage system, submerging the entire property in 4 to 7 feet of corrosive, brackish water for more than a month. The long-term saltwater immersion destroyed an estimated 80% of the flat rides and buildings, prompting Six Flags to declare the park an "effective total loss" in July 2006. Choosing not to undertake the prohibitive costs of rebuilding, the company permanently closed the park, salvaged a few viable attractions (such as Batman: The Ride), and ultimately terminated its 75-year lease during bankruptcy proceedings in 2009.

In its heyday, the Martini could seat nearly 1,000 people. Its architect, W. Scott Dunne, also designed several other notable Texas theaters, including the Texas (Dallas), the State (Austin) and the Ritz (Corpus Christi). Houston's Tower and Alabama theaters, still in use many iterations later, are his, too. Disputes between family members over what to do with the property — which is not a protected historic landmark—reportedly lingered for years. The Bannerman family started a military surplus business near the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 1865, purchasing surplus military equipment at the close of the American Civil War. Bannerman purchased Pollepel Island in November 1900, for use as a storage facility for his growing surplus business. Because his storeroom in New York City was not large enough to provide a safe location to store thirty million surplus munitions cartridges, in the spring of 1901, he began to build an arsenal on Pollepel. Bannerman designed the buildings himself and let the constructors interpret the designs on their own.

As the only town in the area when Reagan County was established in 1903, Stiles was made the county seat. Bypassed by the railroad and eclipsed when oil was discovered near Big Lake, Stiles was replaced with Big Lake as the county seat in 1925.

The Stiles Cemetery was stablished about 1903. Site is on land then owned by early settlers G. W. and Lizzie Stiles. Plot summarizes much frontier history, as it holds graves of cowboys who died in accidents on cattle range; one Spanish–American War veteran; victims of shootings, rattlesnake bites, epidemic dysentery. Most were pioneers of steady habits and quiet lives. Already in use for many years, the 3-acre plot was deeded to county in 1920 by J. D. Wagner, an adventuring man who lived for years alternately in Texas and in South America. There are burials here as recent as 2001.

A dilapidated memento to the cold war, Object 1180, an underground military complex, was built by the Soviet Union when Western Germany joined NATO. These Soviet high-command nuclear bunkers were built in the twilight years of the USSR. Even though the Cold War had already cooled down during the 1970s, construction of several of these alternate command facilities began in 1985. Of these, Object 1161 on the border to Poland in Belarus and Object 1180 in a forest in today’s Republic of Moldova are known.

These are giant metal cylinders with a diameter of about 36 meters each and a height of up to 60 meters, which were embedded in correspondingly large shafts in the ground. The metal cylinders are hydraulically mounted at the bottom and could move in the shafts similar to an earthquake-proof building if a nuclear warhead was to detonate nearby. A common construction back then, which was also used for the command centers of the fixed launch sites. Construction of the facility in Belarus alone is said to have cost about 32 million Soviet rubles until 1990, somewhere between 50 and 100 million dollars. For comparison: a five-story apartment building is said to have cost the Soviet Union about a million rubles at the same time.

Baker Hotel (Mineral Wells, Texas)

The Baker Hotel is a hotel in Mineral Wells, Texas. The Baker Hotel was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The story of the Baker Hotel began in 1922, when citizens of Mineral Wells, concerned that noncitizens were profiting from the growing fame of the community's mineral water, raised $150,000 in an effort to build a large hotel facility owned by local shareholders. They solicited the services of prominent Texas hotel magnate Theodore Brasher Baker, who gained fame by designing and building such grand hotels as the Baker Hotel in Dallas and the Hotel Texas in Fort Worth, and managed the Connor Hotel in Joplin, Missouri.

Construction began the following year on the grand and opulent structure, which was described by Palo Pinto County historian John Winters as a "Spanish Colonial Revival, Commercial Highrise." It would rise 14 stories over Mineral Wells, and house 450 guest rooms, two ballrooms, an in-house beauty shop, and other novelties such as a bowling alley, a gymnasium, and an outdoor swimming pool. Completed three years later with a cost of $1.2 million (equivalent to US$23,000,000 in 2025), the mammoth building instantly dominated the city skyline.

Originally a Norwegian whale chaser "Star II", she measured 99-foot and was built at Seattle in 1912. She worked from Alaska to Antarctica between 1912-1920s and spent 14 years whaling for the Norwegian Ross Sea Whaling Company in the southern oceans off Stewart Island.

During summer between 1926-1927 at the end of her whaling career, she was sold to Pascoe Brothers of Invercargill and renamed Taratahi, she was used briefly as an oyster dredge, she was fitted with tanks for transporting live oysters to northern ports. But she is proved uneconomic as she was a coal-scoffer ship.

‎In 1939 after several years at anchor in Bluff Harbour she was beached and abandoned at Tikore Island.

IJN Urajio Maru

‎IJN Urajio Maru was built in Kobe in March 1938 by Kawasaki Kisen.
‎
‎On the morning of December 31, 1942 a bomb fell near the port side hold of No.1 causing the water column to fall back on the ship and causing further damage. The ship began flooding and lost power. During the attack, four crew were killed. Afterward, the ship underwent emergency repairs but on January 4, 1943 a violent wind and rain storm caused further damage to the ship and the repairs were abandoned.

‎In 2001 the wreckage was investigated and found to be collapsing badly.

IJN Borneo Maru

‎IJN Borneo Maru was built by Kawasaki Shipbuilding at Kobe on July 5, 1917 as a passenger and cargo ship. She was launched on October 28, 1917 as Daifuku Maru No. 14. On November 24, 1917, she was purchased by Osaka Shosen Kaisha (OSK) and renamed Borneo Maru.

Between 1918 until 1941, she operated on the OSK North American route from Kobe then across the Pacific to Tacoma in Washington State then down the west coast and via Panama Canal to ports in the Gulf of Mexico and New York. Also, operated on the OSK routes in the Indian Ocean.

‎On October 4, 1941 She was requisitioned by the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) as No. 520 and converted into a troop transport, october 6 she departed Otaru on Hokkaido bound for Kiska Island. On October 13 at 11:00am she was bombed by three B-24 Liberators northeast of Attu Island and sustained slight damage. October 14 at 2:10pm she anchored in Gertrude Cove off Kiska Island and began unloading.

On October 15, 1942 at 9:00am a formation of U.S. bombers struck and bomb Borneo Maru with bombs bracketing both sides of no. 3 hold and damage the hull in two places. Aboard two soldiers and five crew are killed. At 10:30am the ship raised anchor and requested two Daihatsu barges to tow. Shortly afterwards, Captain Noguchi Wada ran the ship aground to prevent it from sinking and to allow unloading to continue. Aboard, the crew remove plates and hatches from the damaged vessel and use them to construct a metal bunker ashore for use as an air raid shelter.

Afterwards, she was targeted by U.S. planes and repeatedly bombed and strafed for the remainder of October 1942 and into early November 1942.
‎On October 16, 1942 the vessel was bombed by B-26 Marauders with incendiary bombs. Reportedly, during the attack, a B-26 is shot down and crashed into the hatch of the no. 4 cargo hold and the fuel caught fire. During the attack, two soldiers and three crew are killed, on november 7 the shipwreck was bombed by U.S. planes, on november 9 two B-26s and four P-38s bomb the ship but score no hits, and on november 11 three B-26 bombed the ship unsuccessfully.

The shipwreck remained until the 1970s. By 2001, the forward hull had collapsed and disintegrated and was submerged underwater.

F/V Opty

F/V Opty was built in 1970, in Jennings, Louisiana as a Offshore Supply Vessel (OSV) measuring 139 foot. She used to support the offshore oil industry in the Gulf of Mexico as Flying Diamond 2.
‎She was converted to a commercial fishing vessel and renamed Opty in the mid-1980s

In December 1988, she was fishing in the Bering Sea, and had anchored offshore of Shemya Island for the night. Early on a snowy and windy morning their anchor dragged, and the vessel was blown ashore. The vessel took on water, and the crew had to abandon ship. They were hauled onshore by hand lines by fire and security personnel, as Shemya had no water rescue capabilities. All crew members were successfully brought to shore with only minor hypothermia. The vessel was driven onto a steep rocky point of land, completely exposed to northerly swells. Approximately 15,000 gallons of fuel was spilled into the ocean.

F/V Opty’s current condition is calamitous the vessel has been seriously damaged by marine processes, and is approaching the point of total structural collapse. The entire bottom hull is torn out from midships forward, the aft deck has buckled, and much of the vessel’s starboard side is gone as well. F/V Opty’s further disintegration is inevitable as the vessel is further impacted by storms and wave action.

Barge No. 18

Barge No. 18 is a 275-foot long steel-hulled tank barge built in Alameda, California, in 1957.
‎On October 22, 1958. While under towed by the tug Wando, she broke loose and grounded, she was carrying a cargo of petroleum fuel to supply the Northwest Orient Airlines refueling and operations base on Shemya. She is declared a total loss. No life is lost.

The vessel’s current condition is poor, over the years she was used as a scrap metal for various projects on the island, and large amounts of steel were cut and salvaged. Historic photos show the vessel’s stern completely exposed and resting on a rocky substrate.

‎Over the past 56 years, sand accumulation has buried the entire starboard side to the deck level, and the stern is exposed for only two feet above the level of the sand. The landform on the vessel’s port (landward) side appears stabilized by thick vegetation growth, although the starboard (seaward) side is still active and impacted by wave action. Despite salvage and exposure Barge No. 18 is for the most part stable and not in danger of structural collapse.

Sammezzano, or the Castle of Sammezzano, is an Italian palazzo in Tuscany featuring Moorish Revival architectural style. It is located in Leccio, a hamlet of Reggello, in the Province of Florence. The original palazzo was erected in about 1605 by the Spanish nobleman Ximenes of Aragon. In the 19th century, Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximenes d'Aragona inherited the property and remodelled it into one of the largest examples of Moorish Revival architecture between 1853 and 1889. Umberto I, king of Italy, visited Ximenes at Sammezzano in 1878. For a time, it was a hotel. It is now vacant and abandoned.

According to an account attributed to Blind Harry - also known as Henry the Minstrel - in 1298 William Wallace attacked a previous wooden fortification on this site to rescue his imprisoned uncle, a priest from Dunipace. A later castle was burnt or destroyed after the defeat of King James III at Sauchieburn in 1488, and Robert Bruce of Airth was given £100 Scots towards rebuilding. The southwest tower is the earliest part, dating to the period immediately thereafter. An extension was added on the east side in the mid 16th century. Parts of the Airth Castle Hotel building were destroyed when a fire broke out during the early hours of 23 September 2024. The buildings are now abandoned and is disrepair.

The Casa Grande Photogrammetric Test Range is a test range established in the mid-1960s to test the dynamic performance of aerial survey cameras. The range consisted of 272 concrete calibration markers embedded into the Earth's surface in and around Casa Grande, Arizona, United States. The markers are commonly (and erroneously) believed to have been used to aid camera calibration for the US Central Intelligence Agency's Corona spy satellite program; in fact, they were used as references for aerial surveys through photogrammetry. The markers formed a square 16-by-16-mile grid, and were maintained from 1959 to 1972. Some of the original markers can still be found on satellite maps and ground inspection.

She had also sailed under the names MS Arkadia and MS Island Holiday. In 2020, it was planned to scrap her in Coatzacoalcos. However, she grounded in Alvarado after dragging anchor in a storm.

The Tonopah and Goldfield Railroad, a railroad of 100.4 miles in length in the U.S. state of Nevada, offered point-to-point service between Mina and Goldfield, running over the Excelsior Mountains and parallel to the Monte Cristo Range. It operated from 1905 until 1947.

This island is the caldera of an active volcano, which seriously damaged local scientific stations in 1967 and 1969. The island previously held a whaling station. It has now become a tourist destination. Two research stations are operated by Argentina and Spain during the summer season. While various countries have asserted sovereignty, it is still administered under the Antarctic Treaty System, meaning it is under no control.

Cortina Airport (CDF)

Cortina Airport, AKA Cortina d'Ampezzo Airport and Fiames Airport, is an abandoned airport in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Veneto.

The airport was built for the 1956 Olympics. On 3/11/1967, a plane crashed into a mountain ridge due to poor visibility caused by the weather. On 5/31/1976, an airplane stalled, crashed, and caught fire on the runway. Following this, the airport was permanently closed by a decision from the city.

In 2026, the site was used as an Olympic Village for the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, accommodating 1,400 athletes, coaches, and supporting staff. Following the Games, the site will be dismantled and the cabins sold.

The Mount Hope Theater

The Mount Hope Theater opened on April 11, 1947 with Errol Flynn in “San Antonio”. It replaced the Royal Theater, which had burned to the ground in an arson fire on September 30, 1945. It operated until at least the late 1980s, however no idea when it finally closed for good. Although it opened in 1947, past the heyday of vaudeville, the stage area in the back shows a fly system structure - theatrical rigging system - so there must have been stage shows as well.

The whole downtown area of Mount Hope is essentially abandoned. Today, Mount Hope's population continues to decline, leaving it much of a ghost town.
