The Fall MichNet News is now available, both online and as a PDF document. Articles include information on the MichNet Network, DDoS, Internet2, USF, and more.

As another school year starts, organizations can expect a new rash of network abuse incidents. Your organization should have an action plan in place for responding to reports of Internet abuse. See Mike Mosher's recommendations.

Top Five Security WebsitesNew security resources on Merit's website: For individuals that are new to security, specialist Paul Howell has created a "Top Five" list of security websites. This list serves as a great starting point to learn about network security. In addition, the Network Security Special Interest Group's archive is now searchable.

MichNet Network Updates

Dial-in Update: Rose City, Temperance, Rogers City, and Onaway have been upgraded to V.90 service. The MichNet dial-in location in Dryden has been replaced by V.90 and ISDN compatible lines in the MichNet SE-Michigan dial-in location. Users with V.90-capable modems should experience an increase in connect speeds (V.90 troublshooting tips included).

Backbone Update: The November 2000 report summarizes the latest work on the MichNet Backbone and related Merit activities. See MichNet Maps for the latest (November 15) version of the MichNet current and proposed backbone maps.

Universal Service Fund Updates

New USF Flowchart developed by Merit leads you through the USF application process, complete with links to various forms and resources.

The Federal Communications Commission has set the cap for Year 3 of the E-rate (Universal Service Fund) program at the maximum level of $2.25 billion. In Wave 26, Michigan organizations received $227,976.46 in funding commitments, bringing Michigan's Year 3 total to $55,936,547.90.

Trying to sort through all your Universal Service Fund deadlines? Getting paperwork for Years 2, 3, and 4 confused? Jeff Ogden has summarized where you should be with each funding year, including what paperwork is due, when you might hear from the SLD, and where you can get more help.

See Merit's Universal Service Fund for more complete USF information.
