Comenius Logo

History of Comenius Logo

Since our university studies at Comenius University,Bratislava,we were involved in several software projects aimed at education.Andrej Blaho implemented several educational environments andprogramming languages for 8-bit computers. His implementationsbecame very popular and spread through all Slovak schools in 80's.We came across Logo in 1977 through many MIT research reportsand later through excellent Bulgarian Logo books written by R.Nikolov and E. Sendova.

We started new implementation of Logo for Windowsin December 1991. We demonstrated its first version at EuroLogoconference in 1993 in Athens (see Blaho, A., Kalas, I., Tomcsanyi,P.: Comenius Logo: Environment for Teachers and Environment forLearners, in Proc. of 4th EuroLogo Conference, Athens, Supplement,pp. 1-11, 1993, see here). The programmingenvironment used was Borland Pascal 7.0.

In parallel with further development of ComeniusLogo we and our students at Comenius University startedto use it as an experimental tool for several purposes:

in September 1993 we started a class of Informatics (as a separate experimental subject) with two groups of 11 year old children, each group having app 16 girls and boys. Now this experiment is running for three years already, see Comenius Logo in School,
we modified our university curriculum for future teachers of Informatics so that it covers more complex view on symbolic and recursive computations in Comenius Logo and on using this tool as an environment for developing educational microworlds, see Comenius Logo in Teacher Education,
several university students in their final year of studies have used Comenius Logo as an environment for developing their master theses, see Comenius Logo in Teacher Education,
we are using Comenius Logo as a tool for developing professional educational microworlds, see Educational Software Developed in Comenius (Super, Multi, Mega) Logo.

We are deeply indebted to our university studentswho patiently went through our first courses in 1993/94 and 1994/95.They rewarded us by their great enthusiasm in spite of the factthat Comenius Logo environment and language was changing everyweek and they had to follow this randomly winding path with theirfirst projects.

When the interest from foreign publishers appeared,we gained another very important feedback from there. A rangeof users with different professional background has growned considerablyin this way, their diverse suggestions and requirements beingoften very inspiring for us. Namely, we want to mention Addo Stuur - theauthor of excellent introductory books (vol. 1 and vol. 2) onComenius (Super, Multi, Mega) Logo, Stefan Jager - multimediaeditor of A.W.Bruna, Yannis Kotsanis and Dimitrios Kokkinos fromPliroforiki Technognosia, Secundino Correia from Cnotinfor, Portugaland Brazil, and many others.

Beside professional co-operators in many countries,a new type of feedback has emerged recently - reactions,questions, comments and unforeseen applications from childrenand students from different countries, for example, from Ivo Santosand his classmates from Jean Piaget School in Sao Paolo,Brazil.
