my books-to-read pile has been growing exponentially, thanks to friends who share and an unchecked wallet. what is it about the smell of new books?

exciting in a way that only dead trees can be.

i'm biiiiiiiiig on associations. with people, it tends to be music; there's usually one song or one band for everyone i know (yes, even you). but with books, it's food. i'm always, always reading when i eat; in fact, i don't think i can eat unless there are words planted in front of my face.

psychosis is a funny thing.

i'm right at the end of salman rushdie's "the ground beneath her feet", now forever linked to chick peas, brown rice and pasta sauce, and fortnum & mason tea.

master chief 4 master chief.

by the time the coroner arrived, the poison had eaten away at their insides, but that didn't matter; now, their love would last forever.

i've added a new section and sidebar panel called "changelog", where i'll be keeping a list of updates to the site, instead of posting about them here (geeks: this will reflect major updates to waferbaby's cvs repository).

blue raving

for as long as i can remember, trains in sydney have carried signs featuring the following slogan:

at night, travel near the guard's compartment marked with a blue light.

and for as long as i can remember, people have always defaced the slogan by crossing out certain letters so that it reads:

at night, rave naked with a blue light.

it's a well-founded sydney institution, and i was quite surprised to find the slogan, including crossed-out letters, written on the back of a train ticket warning against defacing rail property.

they may not be able to move trains on time, but at least cityrail has a sense of humour.

in other news, i think i'll take up cartooning with pen, paper and a scanner again, instead of with the tablet; despite my (somewhat lacklustre) perseverance with the stylus, i just can't produce the same style of art that i can on paper.

grateful living dead

i've been sitting here watching "night of the living dead" (for the first time, no less; it's been released as public domain, so i nabbed the mpeg4 version). and i've been thinking.

this classic black and white movie was released in 1968, a full nine years before i was born, and i imagine that for those growing up when it was first released, it was a terrifying, shit-your-pants experience.

it comes as no surprise that for me, a manchild of the 80's and 90's co-raised by freddy and jason and chucky and their ilk in their various incarnations, it's not in the least bit frightening.

shock values certainly have changed.

and so, given that i like to be consistent, and knowing from past experience that any time i sit here and mentally scratch my arse at you kids i'm bound to make a brainstorm about it, i'm going to make a brainstorm about it.

brainstorm: what truly shocks you these days?

you answer while i finish watching the movie.
