57.6% of Libertarians spend more time watching cable stations than broadcast networks
Potential voters spend more time watching Cable than Broadcast TV, according to BIGresearch. 45.8% of Republicans, 45.6% of Democrats, 57.6% of Libertarians and 46% of Independents say they spend more time watching cable stations than traditional broadcast networks. Conversely, 36.7% of Republicans, 34.2% of Democrats, 37.5% of Libertarians and 34% of Independents say they watch traditional broadcasts more. The remaining say they watch equal amounts of cable and network broadcasts: Republicans (17.6%), Democrats (20.2%), Libertarians (4.9%) and Independents (20%).

55% of mobile consumers are looking forward to receiving mobile multimedia
55% of mobile consumers said they are looking forward to receiving mobile multimedia, according to 3-ple Media. By 2010, regular multimedia usage among subscribers will be at mass-market penetration levels (31-50%+), according to 58% of operators surveyed.

660 mln virtualized PCs by 2011
Gartner believes that virtualization reduced the x86 server market by 4% in 2006. As hypervisor prices drop sharply and management costs decrease because of increased competition, virtualization will have a significantly larger impact. Gartner predicts that more than 4 mln virtual machines will be installed on x86 servers by 2009. The use of PC virtualization is also set to increase rapidly. The number of virtualized PCs is expected to grow from less than 5 mln in 2007 to 660 mln by 2011.

Average Easter apparel spending to reach $23.82 a person
For 2008 Easter consumers will spend an average of $23.82 for apparel, $21.42 for gifts, $18.12 on candy, $9.11 on flowers and $7.21 on decorations, according to BIGresearch. In total, 25-34-year-olds will spend the most this Easter ($151.41). Discount stores will be the venue with the most Easter traffic this year (58.8%), followed by department stores (35.6%), specialty stores (23.6%) and specialty clothing stores (7.6%). On average, young adults age 18-24 are expected to spend the most on decorations this year ($11.09 each), sprucing up dorms and apartments. Young families (age 25-34) will spend an average of $10.00 on decorations, followed by 35-44 year olds ($7.44) and 45-54 year olds ($5.85).

Network TV ad revenues to reach $148 bln by 2012
By 2012, Informa Telecoms & Media forecasts that global net TV advertising will equate to $148 bln, up 21% on the 2008 figure, according to Informa Telecoms & Media. The US still has considerable influence over the global market, bringing in $43.2 bln in 2007 - or 35% of the world’s total. Japan, the world’s second largest market but home to a sluggish economy, is more or less stagnant, with net TV advertising growing only 12% between 2007 and 2012.

21,400 IT jobs added in California in 2006, 5.9 mln Americans were employed by tech
California’s high-tech industry added 21,400 net jobs - a 2% increase - for a tech industry total of 940,700 in 2006, the most current state data available. Leading the way in job creation were the computer systems design and related services sector (+12,600 jobs) and the engineering services sector (+6,100 jobs). California’s tech workers had the highest average wage at $101,200, which is 112% above the state’s average private sector wage.
Venture capital investments increased 8% to $13.8 bln in 2007, accounting for 47% of all venture capital in the country. Nationally, the high-tech industry added jobs for the third consecutive year. Tech industry employment totaled 5.9 mln, after adding 91,400 jobs in 2007. This is on top of job gains of 139,000 in 2006 and 87,400 in 2005.

Only 19% of Americans plan to buy HDTVs
19% of Americans surveyed in February 2008 said they plan to spend on consumer electronics in the next 90 days, the lowest percentage since the company began measuring in 2002 and a 20% decrease from November 2007, ChangeWave said. Among consumers expecting to receive a tax rebate this spring, only 7% said they are likely to spend it on electronics. 33% plan to pay down debt, 23% will invest the rebate and 21% expect to save it. 30% of households owned one of the newer TVs in early March 2008, compared with 24.9% in early January 2008.

49% of UK kids under 17 have social networking profiles
Almost half of all eight to 17-year-olds online have a profile, Ofcom found. 49% of children 8-17 have an online profile. 22% of 16+ have an online profile. On average adults have profiles on 1.6 sites. 63% of 8 to 17-year-olds with a profile use Bebo. 37% of 8 to 17-year-olds with profile use MySpace. 18% of 8 to 17-year-olds with a profile use Facebook. 59% of 8 to 17-year-olds use social networks to make new friends. 16% of parents do not know if their child’s profile is visible to all. 33% of parents say they set no rules for their children’s use of social networks. 43% of children say their parents set no rules for use of social networks.

37.6% of Libertarians and 26.9% of Democrats blog
Members of all US political parties are using new media in large numbers, according to BIGresearch. The top three new media used most among Democrats, Republicans and Independents are cell phones, videogames and instant messaging. Libertarians, for whom IM is not in the top 3, nevertheless have higher-than-average use of new media. For example, 37.6% of Libertarians say they regularly or occasionally blog, whereas 26.9% of Democrats, 25.7% of Independents and 22.9% of Republicans say they do so.

66% of mobile subscribers view operators as data providers
66% of mobile subscribers said they view mobile operators as data connectivity providers, but 20% said they view them as aggregators and providers of multimedia content and services, according to 3-ple Media. 14% of subscribers agreed that mobile operators are trusted guardians of personal data and information - much like a bank - and as a supplier of personalized mobile multimedia services.

Americans spend $14.44 bln on Easter in 2008
US consumers expect to spend $14.44 bln on Easter in 2008 - or, on average, $135.03 each (vs. $135.07 in 2007), according to BIGresearch. 79% of consumers say they will shop for Easter this year. Of those celebrating, the majority will spend the most on Easter meals ($41.09 on average).

Network TV ad revenues to reach $123 bln in 2008
Global network TV advertising revenues will reach $123 bln in 2008, up 5.8% on 2007, according to Informa Telecoms & Media. States that this is an improvement, partly based on the positive impact of the Olympics, from the 3.5% global rise in 2007. From this 2008 total, net pay TV advertising will bring in $18 bln, a figure which has doubled over the last five years. Pay TV will represent 15% of total TV advertising in 2008.

Global PC shipments to grow by 12.8% in 2008
Worldwide PC shipments are projected to grow by 12.8% in 2008 to reach 302 mln units, according to IDC. Growth will continue at above 11% in 2009 followed by high single-digit growth through 2012, boosting annual shipments to over 426 mln in 2012. The total value of PC shipments is projected to grow by 7.4% in 2008 to nearly $280 bln. Shipment value will continue to grow by roughly 4% annually from 2009 through 2012, reaching nearly $330 bln by 2012. Portable adoption remains the primary driver in all regions, nearly matching record quarterly growth in Q3 2007, and record annual growth in 2005. Increases of more than 50% in Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) and Rest of World helped boost these regions to more than 36% of Portable volume, while the United States and Western Europe saw growth above 20% and continue to account for more than 50% of portable volume.
