Carl Icahn has stepped in to try to make the acquisition of Yahoo by
Microsoft happen. Icahn has sent an open letter to Yahoo's board saying that he is launching a hostile takeover and naming
his proposed slate of new board members. (His success rate on hostile takeovers is very good, by the way, meaning Jerry Yang
probably won't be getting a good night's sleep anytime soon.) An IDG News Service story reports: "Icahn said it is 'unconscionable' that Yahoo's board didn't allow shareholders the option to accept Microsoft's latest offer,
which he pointed out represented a 72 percent premium over the closing price of Yahoo's stock -- $19.18 per share -- on the
day before the initial Microsoft offer." Icahn's slate includes himself, Adam Dell (brother of Michael Dell), and Dallas Mavericks
owner Mark Cuban, reports the San Jose Business Journal. Icahn acquired about 50 million Yahoo shares this month. Says WSJ blogger
Stephen Grocer, "Well, he can do Microsoft’s dirty work, replace Yahoo’s board and hope that Microsoft comes back. Carl had better buy some
Windows Vista machines, pronto." READ MORE.
Even if your users are completely trained to never open Word files with funky extensions, dangerous documents can come
disguised with a friendly ".doc" extension. The May Patch Tuesday included an update that fixed a hole in Word relating to malicious RTF and HTML files, says a post in the Microsoft Security Vulnerability Research & Defense blog. However, if your users don't use, or rarely use, Word to open RTF or HTML documents, you may be better off blocking those files from loading in Word altogether. The SVRD blog posted instruction on how to do that.
Who's at fault for the ongoing, massive SQL injection attack now entering its third wave? Obviously the hackers trying to
create their botnets. But beyond that, the makers of Web server software (like Microsoft) say that poor programming on the part of the user is what makes so many sites vulnerable. IBM is today reporting a third wave of sites compromised by SQL injection attacks. In April, F-Secure found evidence of another huge round of infected Web sites.
The Surface table wasn't big enough. Microsoft envisions your walls as computers. Actually Bill Gates said at the CEO Summit in Redmond today that he thinks all flat surfaces "will eventually have an inexpensive screen display capability and software that sees what you are doing there."
Is there a reaon Microsoft must do everything Google does?05/15/08Google Sky was launched in August 2007 and today Microsoft releases its telescope. Note that you have to download client code to get it to work. READ MORE about this on Microsoft Subnet.
Microsoft Telescope is revealed (on your desktop)05/15/08Google Sky was launched in August 2007 and today Microsoft releases its much anticipated Telescope. Telescope is cool to
use, but please note that you have to download client code (and this applies even to the "Take a tour" promotional site, which you reach after clicking on "Experience it."). And you have to sign no fewer than TWO EULAs -- first to get the Telescope code and then to install the DirectX runtime package necessary to use Telescope. (This also comes with allowing Microsoft to look for and install critical .Net updates, too). For Google Sky, you simply point your browser to the page and start star gazing.

Four patches for May Patch Tuesday
On May 13 Microsoft released four patches. Three were rated critical and fixed holes in Microsoft Word, Publisher and the Jet Database Engine 4.0. Experts say the fourth patch, rated important, could also be viewed as critical because it affects the Microsoft Malware Protection Engine and can result in a crash on a variety of different Microsoft security platforms, including Windows Defender; Live OneCare; Antigen for Exchange and SMTP Gateway; and Forefront Security for Exchange Server and SharePoint.
