Questionrobocopy: access deniedmemberGajendra Sharma4:34 7 Apr '09
Hello,

I am getting "error 5: access is denied " message when trying robocopy:

robocopy c:\user\myuser\Documents\myfile.txt c:\user\myuser\mydest /E /XO stagein.txt

This happens only when i try to copy a file present is existing folder in user's home, such as:
c:\users\myuser\documents or c:\user\myuser etc.

Interestingly, if i create my own folder under these folders and try copying a file from there, it works.
I have tried giving full permissions, changing acls etc. with cacls . But with no avail.

Any help is appreciated.

QuestionWINQUAL -- Crash MiniDumpsmemberPeter Weyzen17:16 25 Mar '09
Hi out there-

Up until now, I've always used the "roll your own" crash handling thing that people do -- catching the crash and writing a minidump...
It's a great way to debug your software after it goes on the road.

But, occasionally I get 0 byte DMP files.... I am considering WINQUAL...
- They collect your crashes, sort them, and deliver them to you with nice reports and a new "response" system, where you can tell the user what to do... Smile

Anyhow, my question: For those of you out there who use WINQUAL -- what do you think of it?
Does it do a better job of collecting crashdumps than I could?

It seems like one of those things the OS is better off handling, than I?

Can I get a Vista laptop to run Remote Desktop 'server' or VNC 'server' as a service, so I can connect without having to log on to the remote laptop? I have a laptop with a broken screen here at work, where I can borrow a screen. I want to set it up that at home, when it's connected to my router via cable, I can just switch it one and connect remotely. I don't want to have to log on, because I can't see most of the display, and logging on blind all the time defeats the convenience - I only need this temporarily, for a few days to get data off the machine.

Sounds like a post that should be under the "General IT Discussions" forum.

Just need data off the machine? Then pull the hard drive out and drop into an external.

VNC should work, I'm sure..But so would Logmein.com.

That's not Vista caused you to put your fist through your new Dell's screen is it Brady? Poke tongue

Laugh No, it's my old Acer - I fell on the screen. My new Dell is actually my new Acer, and I now have a ZAR 800 Targus backpack especially for laptops, instead of a ZAR 70 backpack with padding like a woman's stockings.

Worth it. I've got a Lowepro one with camera stowage as well as nicely sized laptop storage. Fits a lot better than the old no-name laptop rucksack I used before I got my MBP.

If you have business edition (I think) or "better" you can setup remote desktop to accept connections. For vnc I think that ultravnc[^] has a vista compatible product.

QuestionDelay in starting cmd.exememberKeith Worden2:39 10 Mar '09
From about 2 days ago, when I try to start cmd.exe there's a delay of about 10 seconds before the window appears. Before that it used to appear instantly. If I logon with a different userid it appears instantly. So I figure there's some registry setting or something doing this, any ideas?

I'm running Vista and my userid has full admin authority; the shortcut I usually use is set to run as administrator - but this makes no difference; if I run cmd.exe from the run box it has the same delay.

What I'm saying is that you cannot register an activex without being an administrator in both XP and Vista.

QuestionVista thumbnails problemmember__DanC__4:30 24 Feb '09
I am running Vista home premium and I have an external drive containing a lot of image files. When I browse to the drive in Windows explorer, all the images have exactly the same thumbnail even though they are different when opened. Windows seems to pick one of the images from the folder and use that thumbnail for every image. This is quite annoying when it comes to seeing what I have on the drive as they all look the same.

I have tried clearing my icon cache using the cleanup in system tools.

Is there anything else I can do? Does anyone know what could cause this problem?

Thanks!
GeneralRe: Vista thumbnails problemmvpLuc Pattyn5:17 24 Feb '09
Hi,

if you tell Windows Explorer to show hidden files, you might find a "thumbs.db" and delete it.
That may solve the problem.

Unfortunately not. Vista doesn't use thumbs.db and I have tried clearing its icon cache with no change.
GeneralRe: Vista thumbnails problemmvpLuc Pattyn5:26 24 Feb '09
Oh, i forgot.
Google search[^] suggests killin explorer, deleting IconCache.db and even restarting PC. Never did that.

GeneralRe: Vista thumbnails problemmember__DanC__5:27 24 Feb '09
I've tried all of those with no success so far.

I'm trying to figure out how Vista decides which thumbnail to use, I think it may be some has or CRC of the file path but that doesn't explain how it picks the same one as the path must be different. This is really bugging me now!
GeneralRe: Vista thumbnails problemmvpLuc Pattyn6:11 24 Feb '09
Hi Dan,

just a wild guess: maybe Vista is by mistake taking the same icon for all files in a particular folder;
try creating a new folder and moving some of the files in there.

Questionphotometadatahandlermemberjung-kreidler0:18 18 Feb '09
Hi all,

I've got a strange problem while trying to save a file. Accidentally it occurs, that an existing file, which will be overwritten by my application, is still opened by photometadatahandler.dll. This happens after I close the 'save file dialog' of my application.
This is what I do:
- OpenFileDialog (for saving file)
- Select existing file
- Press ok
- Try to do a CreateFile

The CreateFile sometimes returns INVALID_HANDLE and GetLastError shows 5=Access denied.

Now I did the following as a workaround, instead of a simple CreateFile:

do
{
myhandle = CreateFile(...);
err = GetLastError();
TRACE("CreateFile handle %x error %x", myhandle, err);
if(myhandle == INVALID...)
Sleep(500); // try to enable other threads...
}while((myhandle == INVALID...) && (some timeout condition))

My Trace output shows this:
CreateFile handle ffffffff error 5
CreateFile handle ffffffff error 5
'MyApp.exe': Unloaded 'C:\Windows\System32\PhotoMetadataHandler.dll'
CreateFile handle 200 error 0

The Photo..blah.dll seems to lock my file.

1. How can I wait till the photo..blah.dll is unloaded?
2. Or how can I force to unload this dll?

Any thoughts?

jung-kreidler
