New!Cloud Storage Standard Released for Public Review The SNIA Cloud Storage Technical Work Group has completed the first public draft of the new cloud storage standard: Cloud Data Management Interface (CDMI), Version 0.8 is avalable for review and feedback from:
http://www.snia.org/tech_activities/publicreview
The Cloud Data Management Interface defines the functional interface
that applications will use to create, retrieve, update and delete data
elements from the Cloud. As part of this interface the client will be
able to discover the capabilities of the cloud storage offering and use
this interface to manage containers and the data that is placed in
them. In addition, metadata can be set on containers and their
contained data elements through this interface.
This interface
is also used by administrative and management applications to manage
containers, accounts, security access and monitoring/billing
information, even for storage that is accessible by other protocols.
The capabilities of the underlying storage and data services are
exposed so that clients can understand the offering.
Please submit feedback and suggested changes to the document via the SNIA feedback portal:

Get the new whitepaper on Cloud Storage for Cloud Computing The Storage Networking Industry Association in conjunction with the Open Grid Forum have recently published a whitepaper on Cloud Storage for Cloud Computing. The Cloud has become a new vehicle for delivering resources such as computing and storage to customers on demand.
Rather than being a new technology in itself, the cloud is a new business model wrapped around new technologies such as server virtualization that take advantage of economies of scale and multi-tenancy to reduce the cost of using information technology resources.
This paper discusses the business drivers in the Cloud delivery mechanism and business model, what the requirements are in this space, and how standard interfaces, coordinated between different organizations can meet the emerging needs for interoperability and portability of data between clouds.

The SNIA Board of Directors has approved the formation of the Cloud Storage Initiative. This will be a group focused on promoting Cloud Storage within the industry and will support the work of the Cloud Storage TWG and the CDMI specification. The new group will be announced at the upcoming Storage Networking World in Phoenix, so please make plans to join before then. Contact Jay Savell to get started on your CSI membership.

The Cloud Storage TWG had a sucessful face to face in Colorado Springs August 31st.
Meeting Details
In July, we held a
Cloud Storage Mini-Summit. We had presentations from several groups working in the cloud and then went deep on what the Cloud Storage TWG has been working on. An archive of the talks with webex recordings is available here:
Mini-Summit
The SNIA Cloud Storage TWG has released two new documents for public review and feedback. Please discuss these documents on the
SNIA Cloud Google Group, however, if you have concrete contributions, we request you use the SNIA Feedback
Portal unless you are already participating in the TWG.
Cloud Storage Reference Model v0.3 Trial-Use Draft
This paper
sets out a model of cloud storage elements that describes a logical
view of their functions and capabilities using a descriptive taxonomy.
The purpose of this model is to form a basis upon which industry
efforts can be organized, needed standards identified and vendor
products can be described by vendor independent terminology. In
addition, this model is used to describe standard interfaces for cloud
storage.
Cloud Storage Use Cases v0.5 Trial-Use Draft
This document summarizes the use cases in various Cloud Storage offerings.
SNIA Cloud Resources
The SNIA has created the Cloud Storage Technical Work Group for the
purpose of developing SNIA Architecture related to system
implementations of Cloud Storage technology. The Cloud Storage TWG:
- Acts as the primary technical entity for the SNIA to identify, develop, and coordinate systems standards for Cloud Storage.
- Produces a comprehensive set of specifications and drives
consistency of interface standards and messages across the various
Cloud Storage related efforts.
- Documents system-level requirements and shares these with other
Cloud Storage standards organizations under the guidance of the SNIA
Technical Council and in cooperation with the SNIA Strategic Alliances
Committee
- The SNIA is participating in a group that will
coordinate cloud standards across Standards Development Organizations
(SDOs). SNIA has existing relationships with DMTF and OGF that have recently been expanded to include cloud standards. The new group has a Cloud Standards Coordination wiki at:
http://cloud-standards.org
How to get involved
The TWG will also assist and cooperate with other SNIA TWGs in their
efforts to incorporate Cloud Storage into their standards work.
